It was so wonderful to meet you at the Friends of the Library Author Luncheon in Sumter, SC. It was a pleasant surprise that you talked to me in Japanese although I knew you were interested in Asian culture after spending some time in Japan and studied the Japanese language. Wish we had more time to chat in Japanese! I really enjoyed your book "Sweetgrass." Looking forward to seeing you again. Emiko Sullivan

I love your books. I just finished "Sweetgrass" and am waiting patiently for your next one. I write, but I am a little 'slow out of the starting gate'so I do not have a book published, just a few poems. I just read the Osprey sagas. We keep close watch on the osprey nest at the Parris Island Bridge in Port Royal. They are amazing to watch.

The Beach House is an incredible story. I am an Activity Coordinator for an assisted living facility (ages 85-98)in Rock Hill, SC.(20 miles south of Charlotte NC). I started reading The Beach House to them on Feb 2nd.(I have a hard time putting it down and this is my 3rd time.) We can't make it to Columbia, but if you ever come this way, please let me know. You have some very special fans. I'm so excited about the sequel!! Dawn Robertson

Question, I'm reading a book by Mary Monroe and the title is In Sheep's Clothing. Inside cover states other books by Mary Monroe are: God Don't Like Ugle, God Still Don't Like Ugly, Upper Room, Red Light Wives and the books Beach House, Book Club Girl in the Mirror, Four Seasons, and Skyward. Are these authors one in the same? If so, why isn't your whole name of Mary Alice Monroe on these book's? Thank you, Irene Murphy

REPLY

Good question! There are three authors with similar names. But there is only one MARY ALICE MONROE. All books by her use the ALICE.

There is another author who writes as Mary Monroe. (No Alice). Finally, there is Alice Munro.

Your marvelous books compelled me to move from Indiana to our new home near the marshes, off Clements Ferry Rd here in Charleston. Here, I can see firsthand the birds you spoke of in Skyward, walk the beach on IOP where the turtles lay their eggs, and bask in the Carolina sun with a glass of sweet tea and a good re-read of The Four Seasons. I am making every effort to arrange my work schedule so that I might actually attend one of your many events and personally thank you for so re-juvenating my life! Your books keep me riveted; the latest,Sweetgrass, made me swell with pride when I recognized the name of Ethel Manigault and knew where her stand was! You're just a pure blessing, Miss Monroe. Can we chain you to the typewriter? Waiting on April 2007, your devoted fan, Carol Patterson

I had not heard of you before I saw and bought Skyward (from my love of birding in the Eastern Slope of the Sierra). Altho I was raised in the west, I am mysteriously drawn to the SC Coast. So your book fit the bill. I love it! Debby

This is the year! After reading The Beach House I promised myself I would come to see the logger head turtles lay their eggs and help in whatever way I could. I need to know if June or July is the best time. Thanks so much.

"Beach House" is my first book. It is absolutely wonderful. I really like your style of writing and hope to be able to read the rest of your books in the future. Thanks so much.

So far I have read 2 of your books, I have two more sitting on my bookshelf to be read and I plan to keep on reading. The Beach House was a wonderfully written and very compelling book. I often say that I LOVE a book, but I truly loved it. I enjoyed The Book Club, but The Beach House was just perfect. I can't wait to see more from you!

Thank you so, so, much for your book, "Skyward." I was 3/4 of the way through the book when my 6 y.o. daughter was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. The diagnosis came totally out of the blue for me. We took her to the doctor as we thought she had a bladder infection - excessive thirst and urination. In fact I was reading the book in the doctors office while waiting for the results. And this is the weird thing. I literally choose my books by random (as I have so many books in my house, but we won't go there, lol) and this book came along at exactly the right time. Your words and wisdom comforted me in the hospital. By the way my daughter is doing so well. She was diagnosed on Saturday and we took her to school today. Just thought that you may want to know how much you are affecting people's lives. Best to you and yours, Tania S. (Mooresville, NC
