Big Boy arrives at the SC Aquarium.
Posted: 5/20/2007
The turtles are out there. A hefty adult male loggerhead was found floating off Cape Romain SC, his flipper caught in the ropes of a crab trap. The more he struggled, the deeper he cut his fliipper. So the boat captain decided to bring the turtle into shore where he met up with Charlotte Hope and others from SC DNR. The sea turtle was about 300 pounds and not happy about being pulled from the sea, but the crew got him into the hospital and he is expected to make a full recovery.

On Saturday May 19 the SC Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital released two sea turtles back into the ocean. I'm very proud that Barb and I were chosen to carry St. Simon for her release.

THE TURTLES ARE COMING!
Posted: 5/17/2007
Lots of exciting news to report as the season begins. First--South Carolina has its first nest! Bulls Island is the lucky recipient. There has also been a nest reported on the Georgia shores. So hopefully our islands will have a nest soon.
The South Carolina Aquarium is releasing TWO Loggerheads to the ocean on saturday May 19! I've been informed that I will be assisting the release of one turtle, along with Barbara Bergwerf. Yay! The release will be on Isle Of Palms starting with a Beach Sweep at 4 pm. There will also be lots of information and a TED (turtle excluder device) for children to see. the actual release will be at 5 pm. Parking in the lot on Front Beach.
If you choose to come see the release, please follow the instructions of the Aquarium staff and do not crowd the turtles. They will need to see the vista and swim home.
Finally, the Aquarium took in a male loggerhead yesterday. He is HUGE! At 300 pounds, that's a lot of shell, beak and claws. He is gorgeous. The season is off and running!

Turtle Release Info from Director Kelly Thorvalson
Posted: 5/17/2007
We will be celebrating the 7th Anniversary of the South Carolina Aquarium (SCA) on the beach at Isle of Palms County Park. On Saturday, May 19, "St. Simon" and "Lighthouse" will return to the ocean after rehabilitation at the SCA's Turtle Hospital. Everyone is invited to come out at 4 pm to participate in a beach sweep and children will have a chance to run through an interactive Turtle Excluder Device. There will be opportunities to gather information about various SCA and SC Department of Natural Resources conservation programs. The turtles will arrive ~5 pm to be released. "Lighthouse" will be outfitted with a satellite transmitter so we can all track his/her movements after the release. This tracking is part of a research project to get more information about sea turtles with Debilitated Turtle Syndrome, an illness that affects many juvenile loggerheads along our coast. This event is open to the public! Come early to get involved in the activities. I encourage carpooling...this is a Saturday in late May and the beaches will be busy. There is a parking lot at the County Park as well as a city lot and both have costs associated. For SCA volunteers and staff, reciprocity passes will work for the County Park, but not the city lot. If the lots are full, you're on your own! I look forward to seeing you all out on the beach.
