I have read all of your books. I've enjoyed all of them. I just ordered Turtle Summer for my daughter who is an elementary teacher. Thank you for all of your wonderful stories that are entertaining, but also teach us about the turtles. susan fowler
Am reading The Beach House, I just about can not put it down, very interesting reading about the turtle did not know, this happens. Can not wait to read the other books. Thanks Susan Murra
Just finished "swimming lessons." If others urged you to continue the "beach house" characters, please let this be an encouragement to continue again. I love these characters, and the environment its written in, and the turtles. I am an ocean lover born misplaced in minnesota, and thrive on sea stories. Thank you for what you do...a vacation in a book !
Just checked out at our local library your novel SWEETGRASS this is the first time I will be reading one of your books....looking forward to it....just checking your website to see whatcha say about yourself :) Thank you for writing!!
I would like to say that the book The Beach House was wonderful. I can not wait to read the book Swimming Lessons. The first time I visitied the Isle of Palms I got to watch some of the Turtle Ladies in action. The first morning we were there we woke to watch the ladies mark a nest off directly in front of our walk way to the beach. It was the most exciting thing of the whole trip. I would love to be able to live on the Isle of Palms and be a Turtle Lady. I wish all the Turtle Ladies the best of luck in all the work they do. Ashley Rowland
Ms. Monroe, I don't know if you read this, but I hope that you do. I met you several years ago, when I was about 10 years old at Randhurst Mall, where there used to be a bookstore. I was so excited, because I loved to read and you were the first "real" author I ever met!I brought two books from you Girl in the Mirror(you told my mom not to let me read it until i was older) and Second Star to the Right. I have read Second Star so many times, I can almost recite it. I just finished rereading for the first time in a long time and I wanted to thank you. I rediscovered the inscription you wrote, which was Believe! That allowed me to escape reality for awhile each time I read your book. Trust me, my father was an abusive man and the escape was wonderful. I am now studying to be an English teacher and one of the books I can't wait to teach is Peter Pan. I have an undying love for that story, thanks to you. So, thank you for give me my escape and helping me dream a little. Sharon Shapiro
Dear Mary Alice, What can I say? I have read Seagrass, Skyward, The Beach House, and The Book Club. I have never found an author who has captured what I love to read as you have! I look forward to going back to Girl in the Mirror and then on to Swimming Lessons!! Recently retired (March 2nd), one of my fondest wishes is to read, read, read. Thank you for somehow reaching deep inside me and finding my deepest thoughts, hopes, and fears. Please keep the beautifully written novels coming. I'll be 60 in August, so I hope to have at least 20 more years of reading your novels ahead of me! Kindest regards, Carol de Luce Milltown, New Jersey
I am absolutely in love with your books and have shared them with my friends, increasing your circle of readers! Thanks for bringing your talents to us... Barbara
Just finished Four Seasons. What a story. Cried and laughed and felt as I was a part of the Seasons. I have one sister and 2 brothers. My sister and I were very close as children then followed different paths. We have come together again and are enjoying that special relationship sisters can have. Thank you for sharing that story. LOVED IT
Thanks so very much for taking your time to create this very useful and informative site. I have learned a lot from your site. Thanks!!?
I'm so glad to hear the turtle season is going well! My family is making its annual return to IOP July 14-21 and wondered if you expect any nests to hatch that week? We are all big MAM fans and turtle fans and would love to respectfully watch the hatching if we may.
Just finished Swimming Lessons and came back to my real world, which isn't anywhere nearly as interesting as the life in that book and The Beach House. I have read your works and loved them all. You are very gifted and I am thankful to have had the pleasure of going into your books and escaping my real world for a while. I look forward to reading your future publications. Thanks for the insight into the turtle world, too.
Hi Mary Alice, I just finshed reading your wonderful book Swimming Lessons. I enjoyed it so very much as I did The Beach House. Please, won't you write another one about Toy, Cara, Lovie, Flo and Emmi. You are such a great writer, that I want to read everything you've written. In fact, I almost have. Please continue to write and I will always look forward to reading your books. Bess

I love your books~ The Beach House and Swimming Lessons are my favorites. I read The Beach House every year and now I will be reading both every season. Please keep writing these inspirational stories. Teresa
Hi Mary Alice, I thought you might like to know the Bonita Bay Book Club will discuss your new book "Swimming Lessons" at our next meeting July 5. I can't believe it has been 5 years since you visited us and read passages from "Beach House." I loved "Beach House" and am looking forward to reading "Swimming Lessons." In the fall the Bonita Bay Book Club will start its 8th season. Eileen
The Four Seasons -- Your Jilly was my birth mother, almost 65 years ago. She was 18, single, pregnant, and she had me at the Florence Crittenden Home for Unwed Mothers in Washington, DC. I was adopted shortly after my birth. My certified birth certificate looked surprisingly like the one sent to Jilly. I had never seen that certificate until I applied for a passport and had to produce the certified version to complete that process. My birth mother took our secret to her grave, along with the identity of my birth father. I've only recently (2006) found two half-sisters in the DC area and a bunch of relatives in North Carolina. Nobody knew about me until I came forward and found them on the Internet. Thank God for modern technology! Everybody is delighted save for one half-sister in Fairfax, VA. She is in complete denial and wants nothing to do with me. The other has been a delight, introducing me to aunts, cousins, and a whole bunch of folks! The two women were raised together by our birth mother and their father, whom she married five years after I was born. The delightful sister says that the other one has always been distant and stand-offish, that it isn't just me! Thank you for writing The Four Seasons. I had to take it slowly, as every page provides a new jab at a new nerve. Not so surprisingly, my birth mother and I were alike in many ways and did many similar things throughout our lives...yet we never knew each other. I would love to have known her; however, I had the best parents a girl could have ever had. She gave me life...they gave me "a life". My best, Betty Westmoreland
Discovered Mary Alice Monroe's books during a trip to IOP July of 2005. I have been a fan ever since. My family enjoyed our visit to Isle of Palms so much that we will return this summer. (Our trip in 2005 was unplanned. It was a lucky last minute change in plans due to Hurricane Dennis which prevented us from visiting Destin, Florida.) We are looking forward to seeing all that we missed as well as all that we enjoyed the first time!
Dear Mrs. Monroe, My family and I had the pleasure of meeting you in Hilton Head two summers ago while you were promoting Sweetgrass. You graciously posed for a picture with our daughter Gray while my husband Chuck talked to your son about Clemson, our hometown. I have since devoured all of your novels that I can obtain. We are going to be in Charleston next week and I have contacted Waldenbooks at Charleston Place to try to purchase your books that I don't already own. They are holding Turtle Summer for me, but they say that my other requests are out of print. Is there anyway that I can obtain a copy of The Long Road Home, One Summer's Night, and Second Star to the Right? These are the only books of yours that I don't already own. My mother has purchased tickets for us to dine with you in Greenwood on July 19. I look forward to seeing you there and hopefully learning where I can find your other books. Thanks for the many pleasurable hours your novels have given me. Your fan, Coyann Gray Lee
Dear Mary Alice, I am sending this emailto thank you for your wonderful words at the SCMAA brunch in Hilton Head. We have had wonderful comments about your appearance and about your books. I so appreciate your sharing your time with us. I do have a lovely note penned but realized I have no address for a "snail mail" missive. Again, thank you for being a wonderful part of our meeting. Fondly, Emily Hill, SCMAA President
I just finished reading "Swimming Lessons" and LOVED it!! I went to Costa Rica on my honeymoon ten years ago, and we visted Tamarindo (among other places) and went on a turtle watching adventure much like what you described in the book. We did see a loggerhead laying eggs and going back into the ocean, and it was amazing. Reading about it again brought it all back to me. I am a preschool teacher here in NJ and intend on buying your first children's book and incorportaing it into my classroom library. Keep up the great work, Mary Alice, both on the beach on with the wonderful books! Elizabeth
Dear Ms. Monroe, I read your book "Beaches" quite some time ago. Imagine my joy when I saw that "Swimming Lessons" was a continuation of the story. Although I've loved everyone of your books, these two are my favorites. Was sad to have "Swimming Lessons" end. Looking forward to your next book.
I love your books. Are you also the author of "Secrets We Keep."
Hi!! I just finished reading Swimming Lessons & was truly amazed that after 5 years it just seemed like yesterday when I read the beach & wondered about a sequel for it. It took one beyond what I thought it would be like. I could not put it down even at work on the way to our breakroom during lunch hour. O f course every one thought I was crazy but I COULD NOT WAIT TO READ IT.I had bought it for a Mother's Day present for my self & I was not disappointed what so ever. Thanks ever so much & hope you had a great Mother's Day your self.
Hi Mary Alice, I'm a friend of Trish Hutchison & Melisa Holmes (also their Lake Lure realtor). I've ordered 'Swimming Lessons' and would like to order 'The Beach House', though it's unavailable from amazon. Is it possible to order the book directly from you? Your books sounds delightful. I look forward to hearing from you & meeting you as your time allows. Warm regards, Charlene Efird, Broker, CLHMS, CRS Keller Williams Realty
I'm not a daily reader, however once I picked up "The Beach House", I can't put it down. It is truly amazing and heartfelt story. I have truly enjoy reading this book and look forward to reading more of your books.
I just returned home from a trip to Isle of Palms, SC where I have family. I went shopping at Barnes and Noble in Mt. Pleasant and was introduced to your books by a store employee. In the last week, I have read Skyward and Sweetgrass. Tomorrow I will visit my local library to see if they have any of your books. I'm addicted and can't wait to read more. I love the fact that you include history and real information about my favorite place on earth.
I am almost done reading Swimming Lessons, having read The Beach House a couple years ago and completely falling in love with it. I have a "life list" and after I read The Beach House I added "become a turtle lady" onto it. The dream never died, but there is a new fire in my belly now. My husband has promised me a move to SC when he retires...granted we're only 35, but I'll get there someday! Thank you so much for writing about these amazing creatures so beautifully---enough to inspire me, noone has ever called me a nature girl, to want to help! Sincerely, Julie Peacock Northbrook, IL
Love your books. Sweetgrass is my favorite so far. I haven't read swimming lessons yet but am looking forward to it very much. Have a wonderful and safe summer.
love your books, ijust moved here with my family. when i read the beach house several years ago i never dreamed i'd be this close.i'm reading your newest and love it. looking forward to the next. god bless, nancy turco:)
I read The Beach House several years ago. As I started reading Swimming Lessons I realized I had forgotten about the characters in The Beach House, especially Toy, so I bought the book and read it again. It made Swimming Lessons that much better. They are both excellent books.
Hi Mary Alice, I just finished reading Swimming Lessons, and I cried like a baby when Big Girl was released into the ocean. I felt like a mama sending a child off to the unknown. (even though that isn't why Big Girl was released) This was another great book. I so enjoyed it. I learned much more about the Turtles and the love the Turtle Ladies have for them. Billie Jo is going to get me Turtle Summer to read so I can enjoy the journal and the pictures. Thanks so much for writing such wonderful and inspiring books. I have learned so much thru them. we hope to see you again in the near future. Hugs/Love, Mary Ann Barnes
This morning I awoke with circles under my eyes from the tears I shed when Lovie dies. The Beach House is the first of your novels I have read. After church, I will be heading to the book store to purchase Swimming Lessons and Turtle Summer for my 7 year old daughter. Before moving to Tennessee a couple of years ago, I lived in Wilmington, NC. The sand and ocean are in my blood and reading your novel made me homesick yet gave me peace as well. I'm planning a visit to Isle of Palms so I can see what you see. You're writing is beautiful and poignant. Thank goodness fate intervened!
I'm nuts! I just wrote an entry about The Beach House and claimed it was the first novel of yours I have read. I actually read Sweetgrass first and that's why I bought The Beach House. Sweetgrass was extraordinary! I love the way you tell histroy along with the story. The parallels are wonderful. I've driven by those Sweetgrass stands dozens of times. I must buy one now!
I fell in love with Sweetgrass and will now read every book you ever write. Thank you for a wonderful story.
Dear Ms. Monroe, I met you about two months ago when you were signing copies of Swimming Lessons at the Barne's & Noble on Sam Rittenburg in West Ashley. I hadn't yet read The Beach House, so I opted to do that before reading Swimming Lessons. I'm sorry to say that I put it aside until I finished the other two novels that I'd purchased earlier. However, this weekend, I picked up my copy of The Beach House and was hooked. I'm writing to tell you of an experience that I had on Monday, May 28. My husband and I went to the Battery to read and enjoy the lovely city of Charleston, and I was reading your book. The point at which I was reading was set in Charleston, describing the lovely homes along the Battery, and on Memorial Day, no less. Suddenly, I was part of your novel. I've been an avid reader since childhood, which was decades ago for me, and I have yet to experience the wonder and surprise of being in the setting of the work as I was reading it. Did I mention that we just moved from the Chicago area, and that we live in Summerville--all of which is part of the The Beach House? Anyway, at the risk of sounding like a "groupie," I just want to say thank you. I love your book, not only for the wonder of the experience it gave me, but for the education about loggerhead turtles, which we have always loved. I look forward to reading Swimming Lessons and all of your other works.
I saw you on the Atlanta and Company show today. Since I was married on Sullivan's Island and love the Charleston area, I am going to start reading your books. I'm sorry I am not previously familiar with your works (I do read Dorothea Benton Franks), but now I'm excited to find your site and books. I don't read alot of fiction because I enjoy non-fiction better, but it sounds like you incorporate characters with educational materials. Thanks
Hi Mary Alice--just dropping by to let you know that we of your old Glenbrook/Stone Ridge family are enjoying your books and thinking of all of the Kreusis when we do. Elizabeth and I are wondering where and how Claire is, how life in the South is treating you. Thanks for the hours of reading pleasure that makes our summers fun! Best wishes, Kathy Bogado
I came to your book signing at Hilton Head this month. You signed Turtle Summer for my granddaughter Rachel. I have just lost my husband and was going to ask you if you have a book with that story...that afternoon I started The Book Club not knowing the story. I am still shattered and many times the book was very tough but the Epilogue has helped more that any Doctor or Therapist. I will become whole again. God Bless You!
Dear Ms. Monroe, I have gotten hooked on the South and our beautiful stories of the sea turtles! You make me laugh and cry..sometimes as the same time! Hope you continue to share your beautiful Lowcountry with your readers and the journey of the sea turtles! Looking forward to your next book. Sincerely, Earlene Hollis

I have asked several times for Turtle Summer at my local bookstore, and they tell me it isn't on the books in print list. Wasn't it published the same time as Swimming Lessons?
I think that your books "The summerhouse" and "swimming Lessons" awake the turtle lady in all of us. I just finished reading swimming lessons and I hope that this is not the end of the journey for Cara, Toy, Flo, Emmi, and Little Lovie...I have truly enjoyed these characters and their love of nature. I enjoy the little tid bits of information that you have made sure to include in these books..The story told by Brett to Little Lovie about the male and female crabs (Jimmies & Soots) and how the male crab hangs on to the female crab to protect her. You Capture the true beauty of the south and make each and every one of us want to have a little beach house by the sea armed and ready with our turtle gear:)
Hi Mary Alice, I just wanted to touch base with you and tell you it was great to listen to your talk when you were at Barnes & Nobles in Greenville, SC. I got the book Swimming Lessons on Mother's Day, Billie Jo wouldn't give it to me before then, so I'm just reading it now and I love it. I sometimes feel I'm reading about you and your life in your books. The turtles are so interesting and I've visited several sections of your website to find out more about them. I think I would just cry when one had to be released back into the ocean but I know it is for the best for the turtles. We only get to Charleston now in December when they have the Christmas Parade as they have Basset Hounds in the parade and we have a basset hound here at home. I have enjoyed all of the books I have read, really enjoyed the one based on Peter Pan ~ love him and that story myself ~ always have loved fairies ~ my Mom use to tell me stories when I was a child and many had faries in them ~ she was a great story teller and also book reader to me. Billie Jo never got to know her as she passed before Billie Jo was born. Billie Jo also enjoys your books even though she is quiet at times. She said to remind you to look into the Lasik Eye Surgery ~ attend one of the seminar's on it ~ you'll be hooked from the get go. I hope to see you again and have an enjoyable summertime. Hugs, Mary Ann Barnes
I love your books . I think sweetgrass is my favorite so far. I can't wait to read swimming lessons
At my daughter's recommendation, I read your book 'The Beach House'. For Mother's Day, she gave me the sequel 'Swimming Lesson'. I loved the stories immensely and can't wait to see if there is a third book with the same characters. Your books helped me enjoy the visit I just had to Charleston and Isle of Palms with my daughter. Thank you.......Sue
Hi Mary, I am a librarian in Jacksonville FL. I had read Beach House a few years ago and was thrilled to come upon Swimming Lessons. I grabbed it right off of our new books cart! I had learned a bit about the sea turtles in the first book, but the sequel is so informative. Yesterday, I came upon a Jack Hanna program that highlighted the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. I got to see the loggerheads lay their eggs, return to the ocean, and watched the hatchlings. How timely for me. I now plan to participate in the Florida Sea Turtle Watch programs this summer. I have also wanted to visit Isle of Palms after reading yours and Dorothea Benton Frank's books. I saw online that there are ecotrips. Thanks so much for your inspiration and bringing one of nature's amazing creatures to our attention. If you're ever in our area, I'd love to meet you. Gail
I just recently finished reading Sweetgrass and i loved it , i felt as if i was right there , i couldnt put it down . Are there any plans for a book as to where they left off at the end of sweetgrass .
Just finished reading your book, Swimming Lessons, and enjoyed as much as I did Beach House. Beach House had been one the books read for the Socastee Library Southern Women Book CLub. We will be reading Sweet Grass in September. If you are near the Myrtle Beach area in September, we would love it if you would be our guest on September 13. We have never had the privilege of having an author at our meetings. Again thanks for a GREAT read. Helena
Please E-mail some instructions for having my The Beach House book autographed by Mary Alice Monroe. I had an autographed copy from her visit on Turtle week-end at Ponce Inlet, Fl and lost it as we traveled to KY when I was only half-way through reading it. I'm in the process of purchasing another book, but do not know how to send it to Mary Alice Monroe for a signature!! Please reply! Thanks so much. I'm enjoying the book very much. Beverly Gerhart
Congratulations. I have just finished The Beach House and am now waiting to be able to get The Swimming Lesson. What a joy to read books that are well written with characters that you want to love. The underlying themes are an added bonus and encourage me to further reasearch. I have lent your books around my place of work and have had nothing but enthusiatic comments. I find it very hard to get your books here. Keep up the excellent writing and I hope to see you and SC inthe future.
I READ THE BEACH HOUSE SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND LOVED YOUR BOOK. I FINISHED SWIMMING LESSONS AND YOUR NEW BOOK IS WONDERFUL. I DIDN'T WANT THE BOOK TO END. I HOPE YOU WILL WRITE ANOTHER BOOK WITH CARA, BRETT, TOY AND ETHAN. OF COURSE I HAD TO REREAD THE BEACH HOUSE AFTER I FINISHED SWIMMING LESSONS. GREAT STORYLINE. I HAVE READ ALL YOUR BOOKS AND ENJOYED THEM ALL. I AM A LIBRARIAN IN A SMALL TOWN WITH A SMALL BRANCH LIBRARY. YOUR BOOKS I RECOMMEND TO ALL THE LADIES. THANK YOU. LINDA
I have read all your books and just finished Swimming Lessons and loved it!!!
I have invited three friends for you. Hope this works out. Thanks grace
I went right out and bought Swimming Lessons another wonderful book. i have all of your books even 2 of your first ones I was able to get. Just love your writting.
Woods Hole is in Massachusetts, not Maine. I loved Swimming Lessons - I have loved all of your books. I learned so much from Beach House & just wanted to bring your attention to the error so that someone didn't think that your other facts were not correct either. We go to your neck of the woods each year, Folly Beach & are saddened each year at the loss of character & local feel as well as the loss of habitat for the wildlife & are appalled at all the lights that are left on on the front beach each nite. Hopefully your books will help more people be aware of the effect of their actions.
DEAR READERS,
I KNOW OF THE WOODS HOLE ERROR AND AM HORRIFIED! I DON'T KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED BUT REST ASSURED THE MISTAKE IS CORRECTED IN FUTURE PRINTINGS!
MAM
I love your books. I feel like with each one I become a part of the story, like I am right there with the characters. I just finished swimming lessons. I hope there will me more! Thank you!
Hi Mary Alice, I met you last week-end at the Hilton Head Marriott. I'm the first grade teacher from Greenville SC and we love writing, science, nature, poetry, and your Turtle Book. We began reading it today and they were fascinated. They want to write a book like it. I have our picture, but I lost your email address. Can I get it to send you our photo? I'm telling our PTA about you to see if you can come for an Author Visit. Thanks so much! Fran
We would like to get on Ms. Monroe's radar for a possible stop on any book tour she may have. Thank you for your time.
I went right out and bought Swimming Lessons another wonderful book. i have all of your books even 2 of your first ones I was able to get. Just love your writting.
I just fininished a vacation in the Charleston, Savannah, GA area. We stayed on Edisto Island. I fell in love with the island because it is still primitive. Please do some research of the early families of the island and write a book about them much like Euginia Price did of St Simon's Island. I am reading Sweetgrass and I'm loving it so much I don't want it to end. I will surely read others you have written. Thanks for a good read! patty
Hello, Mary Alice: Just wanted you to know I truly love Swimming Lessons! Thank you so much for sharing it with your readers. You're doing such great work for both the humanities and for the environment. I have all your books and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Swimming Lessons and I was not disappointed! I'm a cat person myself, but could actually expand my interests to include your beloved turtles if I'm ever lucky enough to live in the beautiful SC coastal area. Keep the good reads coming! Best wishes! Terri
Thank you so much for talking with us yesterday at The Happy Bookseller. You were very kind to take the time to talk to my daughter Karoline. I spoke with my media specialist here at school this morning and we would like some info on you school presentations.
