Dear Ms. Monroe, I can't tell you how delighted I was to discover that my name and 'Shrimpboat song" are mentioned in LAST LIGHT OVER CAROLINA! My wife has been a fan of yours for quite a while and she has already purchased copies of this book for herself and gifts for the whole family, as well. She has been accusing me for over 30 years of being "almost famous" and now she says I am more almost famous than ever! It would be such an honor if you would allow me to send you a copy of my HACK IS BACK album, on which my Shrimpboat song is featured. (The album, by the way, received the award for "Best Blues Album of the Year" at the 2004 Carolina Beach Music Awards Show.) If you would respond with a physical address to your publisher or office where I could send you my CD, I will get it in the mail immediately. Again, thank you SO MUCH ... what an honor! Sincerely, Hack Bartley

A NOTE FROM MARY ALICE
This is a thrill for me, a Hack Bartley fan! What Hack is referring to is that in the book the crowd sings the chorus of a popular song of his... "Don't Wait Up on the Shrimp Boat Baby, Cause I'm Coming Home With the Crabs"

Mary Alice,

I am a member of the IOP Turtle Team. I've met you several times before with Mary Pringle. Long story short, I have a friend in Colorado who wants to meet you and she is trying to get to CHS to use her frequent flyer miles as she is a single parent with little income. She loves your books and is a huge fan. She wanted to come visit Charleston when she thought you might be here. Would you accept a breakfast, lunch or dinner invite so I could take you and my friend to eat and chat for a bit? We could meet at Sea Biscuit for breakfast/lunch or I would take you to dinner at Boathouse on IOP if you would like. I am going to email Mary Pringle to see if she has your telephone # and try to contact you direct. My friend called this morning 12/29/08 and said she could find a free seat the weekend of Feb. 13-16, 2009. Would you be available and would you be so kind to let me treat you to dine so my friend could meet you?

I went to the Alibris web site again and finally found the books; Secrets We Keep and The Long Road Home. I was excited my personal library now will have all your ten books. I am presently reading Edgar Sawtelle( I love dogs). It is Ok , I freguently do not agree with Oprah's book selections, even though I feel she is a wonderful person. My next book, I will be rereading Agony and Ecstasy- I love Irving Stone. Looking forward to reading Last Light Over Carolina. Good luck with your Book Tour!!!

Hi Mary

All the way from UK!

I came across your book, The Secrets We Keep, in a magazine under the Recommended Read section and absolutely loved it!

Just checking out your website to find out whether you've got a new book out or past books! I can't wait to get hold of them & spend more time in bed reading all those wonderful stories of family bonds and about Lowcountry and its people, tradition, history, knowledge, etc.

This is what books should be about, a bit of fact & a bit of storytelling.

Thank you for a wonderful time!

Kind regards
Emily

The first of your books I read was Time is a River which, as a fly fisherwoman, I completely understood and enjoyed. My friend and I have actually gone fishing with Starr Nolan in North Carolina. I passed this book to a friend who had breast cancer, and I think had participated in Casting for the Cure, and she loved it too!!!
I would like to give The Beachhouse and Swimming Lessons to someone as a going away gift and I would like you to sign it if at all possible. How would I go about doing this?
Thanks, Wanda

Just wanted to let you know that I absolutely adore your books! I am truly addicted to them and I just wish that you could write faster! Just kidding, but wanted to thank you for sharing your talent with all of your loyal readers, of which I am one.
Thank you,

I am currently reading Skyward, and recently visited VINS( go to their web page). It is the Vermont Institute of Natural Science ( A rehabiliation center for raptures). What a spiritual experience ,seeing a Bald Eagle up close. The program and facility is very educational. Being a Sea Turtle Enthusiast, this was a different kind of experience for me. My favorite I think was the Snow Owl.
My friend laughed when we found a sea turtle stuffed animal in the gift shop, saying "they follow you every where Sheehan."
Looking forward to Last Light Over Carolina.
Have a nice holiday.

Thank you, Mary Alice!! I just finished "Time is a River" and again fallen in love with you and your way with words. In these difficult times it is so important to lift each other up and you and your work does that for me.Keep up the good stuff.

We met Mary Alice at a book signing in Charleston in Nov. and talked with her for quite awhile. My daughter loves her book Sweetgrass and had her sign a paperback copy. Mary Alice told us if we got hard back copies to e-mail her and she would send us an insert that we could put in our books. We would like one signed to Becky and one to Cindy. Where can I e-mail this request?

Cindy Leeper, SC Dec. 4

Love Love Love all of your books, what an escape when I read them....it is like I am actually at the beaches.....can't get enough of them. Please let me know when your latest book will be published. I can't wait. I absolute LOVED Time is a River..Thank you. Rosanne

While I never seem to find time to read anything but student papers during the semester, I did manage to carve out some personal time for Time is a River . . . and I loved it.

It's haunting. I found it strange how much I identified with this character with whom I have few if any common experiences. I don't fish and don't intend to. Thankfully, I haven't had cancer. But I loved her and I have passed her on to friends who need to meet her.

I just bought Swimming Lessons and look forward to semester break.

Hi Mary Alice....

Just wanted to say thanks for your time at the 11/21 writer's workshop at the University of SC- Women, Nature & Creative Collaborations. It was great to meet all three of you and to hear you tell of your individual processes and how you are inspired to write and paint. I loved seeing the collaboration of poetry and and art as well. Please pass along my thanks to Mary Edna and Marjory as well. It was a great day and I'm so glad that I was a part of it. I can't wait to read "Beach House" and then "Time is a River" especially now that I've met you and heard a bit about how you work.
Thanks again for taking the time and sharing with us.

Julia Hook
(I was the curious redhead asking all the questions during the art portion!)

Julia Hook, SC Nov. 22

I first became acquainted with your writing when I picked up Beach House in 2002. I was attracted to it because I had a summer cottage in the upper peninsula of Michigan on a small island that the freighters passed. My aunt had a home there and through the summers I grew up there. This was also a time when my husband was fighting a terminal diagnosis with cancer and I remember feeling that it was destiny or fate that I stumbled across your book at this time. When I finished Beach House I felt so calm and fulfilled. It was such a good story. Since then I have read all of your books and the other night I finished Time Is A River. Once again this book gave me such a feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment. I read a great deal and dabble in the writing of family stories and you capture so much in your writing of the relationships of your characters that I can see and feel parallels in my own life. Mia's "in the now" moments in fishing could be my own--I have derived great resolve and strength from the stillness of the water and my rod. I loved the story within the story of Kate Watkins--what a wonderful independent woman of resolve you created. And I identified a great deal with Mia's questions and self reflection in her battle with cancer. I certainly experienced this with the grief and loss of my husband.
Though I have not traveled to the south except to Cape Hatteras your books invite me to explore the low country. You are a prolific writer and I have enjoyed all of your books but Beach House and Time Is A River are exceptional in holding me captive and making me reflect and providing me with such satisfaction that I have spent time reading your work. Thank you, Sue Rossi

I just finished Time is a River and I enjoyed it tremendously. Although I live in Calif, I was born in South Carolina - my family is from Columbia. In 1910, my great grandfather bought a summer home in Saluda, NC and it is still in the family. I spent many of my summers there and my honeymoon 25 years ago. I returned there October 2007 and plan on returning in this spring. I was wondering if the town was based on Saluda. The train, the stores, the environment all felt very familiar to me. Thank you for a wonderful book.

Dear Mary Alice,

I recently discovered your books and I fell in love w/ them. Truly, you are a gifted author and storyteller.

Would you mind signing several bookplates for me so that I can affix them to your masterpieces. I would be forever grateful.

Blessings to you and yours.

Karen Kukrak, PA Nov. 17

Dear Mary Alice,

Awhile back I signed your guestbook (I'm sure you won't remember me)and I told you how much I loved The Beach House and that I felt a connection to your books. When I read Skyward and told you I was from Wallingford you then wrote to me to tell me about your husband's family farm in Tinmouth and about your very first book. I then searched the internet and found it...which it's signed....and had never been read. Well...guess what...it has now. I bought a few more of your books from Ebay and then my daughter bought me Swimming Lessons, Turtle Summer and Time is a River for my birthday. I decided to save Time is a River for my last one to read. Now I can say that I have read all of your books !!! I have to say....I loved them all and although I felt The Beach House to be my favorite....Time is a River was simply Awesome and I LOVED it !!! But I have to tell you how I relate to most of your books...and I will try to keep it brief and not bore you. I was born in Rutland Hospital, grew up in Wallingford as a Catholic, married young and moved to Danby. While living in Danby I worked for The Orvis Company in Manchester, VT. I learned while working there that it's not a fishing pole but a ROD so when I read that in your book it made me laugh !! I was also very familiar with the Battenkill because at Orvis they had a Fly Fishing School...and also a Shooting school. I enjoyed working there (was early 70's) and was sad that I had to move away due to a messy divorce. My daughter's father grew up in Danby and he still lives there today. Later on in my life I met my husband (now married for 23 years) when he lived in Middletown Springs and hired me to work for him in his Accounting practice in Rutland. It was not long after I worked for him that I became his wife. We now live in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont near the Canadian border in a beautiful Log Cabin with 123 acres of what we would like to think of as God's Country !! We have an Accounting and Tax Business that we operate out of our home. What prompted me to write this tonight was that I just found out my Uncle Frank is coming to Vermont next week for a week and I'm excited to see him. My dream is to take a trip to Charleston with my daughter and possibly my Mom if her health will allow...hopefully next year...and have my uncle tour us around and then also enjoy sitting on the beach. Because he knows so many people, we can hopefully find that great place to stay. Your books have been a blessing to me and will continue to bless others as I pass them along and also tell people about them. You'd be surprise how many people both my daughter and I have told about your books...especially The Beach House. Bridget has not read all of your books yet...but she intends to. She was up here a couple weeks ago and took back Swimming Lessons and my Mom wants it next...and also my friends. I want to thank you again for taking the time to read this and also thank you for writing such wonderful books !! Take care and May God Bless you and your family.

I live in a very small town called Salmon, Idaho. Its on the river of no return. My husband an I operate a Cattle Ranch, and I work 3/4 time for the University of Idaho.
The first novel I read of Mary Alice was Beach. I was hooked. I look for all her books and now have most of them. My favorite past time is reading Mary Alice Monroe books and growing rose's. I do share them with all of my family and friends, but they must be returned. I have never join a book club, but I am interested. Please send more information.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have discovered your books. Having read all of them, I thought the two "beach" books were my favorite until I read "Time is a River." What a wonderful book! I especially like the fact that the setting is in the mountains, an area I truly love. I also like that Mia is a survivor in so many ways.
Just keep writing these wonderful books!

Laura Keeter, TN Oct. 19

Hi Mary Alice. I read your book to my assisted living residents at Westminster Towers in Rock Hill. We spoke over the phone when my mom came to your book signing in Asheville. I read the book first. I read it in about 4 nights. It was worth all the sleep I missed. My residents enjoyed it too. Every time I have read one of your books, it has somewhat parelled with something in my life on a very personal basis. (Can't wait to read the next book, I have other issues i need to deal with. Ha!) Just wanted to say thanks for a great read.

I was in Chattanooga this summer when I entered a small bookshop where you were dropping off some autographed copies of Time is a River. I thought you might come back into the shop, but watched as you climbed into your car and rode off. It was this month that I was finally able to read your book and fell in love with it. Being a breast cancer survivor myself, I enjoyed seeing how Mia was finding herself and realizing that life can go on. Thank you for such a great story! Donna Walker

I have just finished reading "Time is a River", my introduction to the beautiful works of Mary Alice Monroe. Having just lost my precious Mother, Lola Jane Rutland, on September 9th (coincidentally, her 92nd birthday) and observing the birth of 2 new grandsons (Alexander Naoto Harris and River Peyton Miller) the following week, my heart was both heavy and full as I attempted to absorb myself in this wonderful book over the last few days. I was drawn to this book by it's title and the author's name, as well as the peaceful bookcover as it was displayed in our local library. I am also a "Mary Alice" but have always been called by a nickname, "Susie". I am the 9th child born and raised in the deep south of Georgia to parents of 13 children, 7 daughters and 6 sons. I have always been an avid reader, and lover of nature. I married a Baptist minister and lived in the Ozarks of Arkansas for many years where I came to truly love the mountains as much as I love the seashore and the ocean. Thank you so much for taking me to the beauty of the North Carolina mountains through the pages of this inspiring and captivating novel, and for giving me a retreat from the overwhelming sadness of earthly farewell to the magnificent woman of strength, tenderness, and love which was my Mother ! I am looking forward to another great read from you and see that there is already a great list from which to choose the next one. You are truly a gifted author, and a refreshing discovery!

Mary Alice Harris, OH Oct. 14

My friend gave me a sculpture of a little girl holding a sea turtle.I immediately thought of "Turtle Summer". Would you like me to send a picture of the statue? You should HAVE it:)

Bonnie Hawk, SC Oct. 7

I've just read The Beach House and Swimming Lessons, about to start Sweetgrass. Your characters are so alive and real, one has to stop and remember that. I've visited a friend in Summerville many times and love the area.

One critique--tell you editor you want a better proofreader. There are some very easy to spot and sloppy errors that went unchecked. It tells the reader that you aren't valued--maybe another house would provide you a better proofreader.

Or you can send me the drafts to proof--after 43 years as a secretary, they pop right up.

Anna Foss, NY Oct. 5

I recently read Skyward & enjoyed it very much. I have one comment I'd like to pass on... I was disappointed in the Author's Notes at the end of the book. After seeing contact information for Birds of Prey Center and Gullah/Geechee Sea Islands Coalition, I was hoping to see something about diabetes. There are many associations related to diabetes that need higher awareness, as well as what I'm assuming are the authors's more personal interests. Birds of Prey & diabetes were two main focuses of the book and I feel both should have been acknowledged equally.

Emily S., MN Oct. 5

Mary, I just finished reading Swimming Lessons and as with all of your books that I have read, it was wonderful. I have been searching for The Long Road Home and have not been able to locate it. I have checked all the new and used book stores in my area and the local library. Any suggestions on how I can get my hands on a copy of this book?
Thanks,

Deb

Deborah Tyson, FL Oct. 3

I found your book, The Beach House, at a Humane Society sale that I was volunteering at. Being originially from SC and loving nature and of course, sea turtles, I was in heaven with your book. I passed it along to several members in my church and they have begun reading your other books. You're a great writer with a sweet heart and living in a beautiful part of the world! Thank you!

Susan Graves, GA Oct. 1

Thank you for your books. I have them all except the "Time is a River" I can relate to all of them. I cried so hard when Toy had to let go of Big Girl. I had a box of tissue and cried like a baby. I have lost so much in my life sometimes I feel so alone. In your books life happens to other people, too. I always watch ETV for the loggerhead specials and I do want to get involve. I also like your special on ETV. My goal is to go to your book signing.

Carla Hinson, SC Sept. 22

Dear Ms. Monroe,

My mother-in-law mentioned to me that you were interested in a song themed around your novel, "Time Is A River".

I am a songwriter in Nashville, TN and this has piqued my interest. I read the story and found the intertwined themes of recovery and redemption to be very inspirational for a song.

I have finished a draft of a lyric called, "I Am Not Lost" that could work for this purpose. I have not written the music yet or produced a recording because I wanted to run it past you to see if it is something you would have further interest in.

Would you like to take a look at the lyric?

John Trentes, TN Sept. 23

I love your books. I moved here last December from California - by myself - and they have been a wonderful guide. I started reading Time is a River right after a weekend trip to Asheville and the mountains and found it so timely. Now I want to try fly fishing!

Anne Gray, SC Sept. 22

Just finished Time is a River. As a male I am confused by the ending. At no point that I can see does Mia give anyone hope that she will return even though Stuart tells her that he will stay in Watkins Mill. To me that is asking her to stay. She finds a man who wants her the way she is and she has to think about it?? Her friends want her to stay. She has to go back for unfinished business BUT will she come back?

Alex Fazekas, OH Sept. 22

Thank You for the time and imagination you put into your books... However.. I realize most of your books are based on Nature... Thank you for that.. as well as putting issues front and center in the minds of your readers... Suse

Susan Cahill, NM Sept. 22

Dear Mary Alice,
I have just read all your books except Girl in the Mirror which I will be ordering from Amazon today.
You tell the best stories. I am absolutely enraptured by the first page and cannot put the book down until I finish it. I guess that is why I read them all so quickly.
I was especially glad to have read The Beach House before Swimming Lessons as it was a sequel.
Won't you please write a sequel to Time is a River...I would love to see if Mia does, in fact, return to the mountains; to Stuart and fly-fishing!
Regards,
Vickee Leach

You are an amazing author. Time is a River is one of the best books I've read in many years. I love to read and generally reserve books at the library; when I saw your book on the new book shelf, the title grabbed me and so did the story. I've recommended this book to my bunco friends and ordered two copies from Amazon, one for me to keep and one to give as a gift. I hope there will be a follow-on story !

Alice Boyce, NC Sept. 20

Hi,
Thanks again for many hours of enjoyment. Your books often are a window to my soul. I have shared them with many friends. I read your appearance schedule, it does not apppear that you will be in the Northeast any time soon, am I correct? My good friend and I have agreed,we will make a Girls Weekend excursion if you happen to have a Book Signing within our traveling area.

TIme Is A River is my first encounter with who has easily become one of my favorite authors. I am not even through with the book and I am enthralled. This is EXACTLY what I define as a perfect read for this 58-year-old grandmother! I now have on my wish list a vacation ALONE next year in Asheville (seriously) and a week of FISHING. I have been divorced for years and have always loved to fish, but have not done so for years because I feel it is something I cannot do alone. Now I have changed my mind. I am so excited! If Mia can do it, so can I! I live in NC about 3-1/2 hours from Asheville and I have always wanted to visit there. A friend from Augusta GA moved there a few years back and I plan to surprise her with a call informing her of my plans. SHe will be FLOORED! Again, to the book, this is a captivating, enchanting, CLEAN, well written story and I cannot wait to get back to the library to find all the MOnroe books they have, and what they don't have - off to Amazon! Thank you for gifting the public with your talent. My best to you and Godspeed in all you do in the future -

Carol

Carol Thomas, NC Sept. 19

I am reading Time is a River which I find fascinating. However, on page 111 you describe Mia's encounter with the town librarian in very condescending terms! As a retired public librarian I would like to hope that your fictional librarian is an exception to the rule. Most of us are only too willing to help our patrons without the "air of someone being disturbed from some important task to deal with something no doubt trivial". As most of us have learned...patrons questions are important to THEM and require our full participation. I won't even go into your physical description of Miss Pace!!!!
Maybe I'm jumping the gun here and it will turn out that Miss Pace is really just like the public librarians I know---helpful, interested and interesting people with a love and thirst for knowledge and the patrons who ask for help.

Mary Alice,

The members of the Mt. Pleasant Newcomers Book Club who call themselves "The Page Turners", would like to thank you once again for taking the time to phone us this afternoon and add your voice to our discussion of "The Four Seasons".
Louise Pennisi, Alice Williams, Anne Roffey, Barbara Wilson, MaryAnn Barnard, Louise Frey, Donna Gadd, Anne Smith, Betty McMahon, Elizabeth Larke, & Nancy Wolfe.

As was mentioned we just celebrated our third anniversary. I believe a large part of what makes this diversified group so cohesive was our first discussion over "The Book Club", where twelve almost total strangers felt comfortable enough to open up and share experiences similar to Midge, Gabriella, Eve, Annie & Doris.

Louise Pennisi, SC Sept. 18

I have read all your books and think that each one is the best til I read another. As a two time breast cancer survivor I particularly enjoyed this latest one. Fortunately, my husband is a hero and with he and my family I am happy to be a 16 year survivor. When I started this book this week I thought it sounded familiar and thought not possible. I knew I did not read it. Then I recalled at the SC book festival you read some of it to us and that is what I retained.

Peg Barker, SC Sept. 18

I found a copy of "The Beach House" while vacationing in Top Sail, NC., at a tiny resale shop, I spent a whole $1.25 for the copy. I read it within one day, couldn't put it down. Related to the environment immediately, as my dream is to retire in a little beach house. Ran right out and bought "Swimming Lessions" & "Turtle Summer", also read while on vacation at Top Sail. Both books prompted me to visit the Karen Beasley Turtle Hospital in Top Sail, maybe I'll be a Turtle Lady one day myself. Also, purchased "The Book Club". As well, a fantastic read and have forwarded all books along to family members/friends.

Mary Alice Monroe brings to life the places, characters and life experiences in her books that one can easily relate too. I am currently collecting all her other books and am looking forward to escaping into the many worlds she has created for her fans. A cup of tea and an afternoon with one of her books, what more could one ask for. Oh yes, a box a Kleneex at times may come in handy.

Would love to find a Book Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This book is one of your best. I could not put it down. I was reading at the Y, and I forgot to get off one of the machines!!! I have rec. it on Diane Chamberlain's website, to my online bookclub, to those at the library, and to many others...It is unique...I love it...a keeper.

Brenda Burke, WV Sept. 13

I just finished reading "Time is a River" and I loved it. I get so involved in the characters of the book that it is both a reward and a loss for me when I get to the end. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed your other books as well. I read many books but yours touch me in a way others have not. Your understanding of women and how they can grow and overcome their challenges in life and your knowledge and understanding of environmental issues is inspiring to read.
Is there a way I can be informed when your future books are published? Sharon

Sharon Michael, RI Sept. 9

I started by reading the Beach House on the beach when I was on vacation. It was the best! I than gave it to my Mom to read and she loved it and has since bought several books. We have had many strange things related to your books happen. I have just bought her a turtle for her Charm bracelet. We grew up in Wallingford and that is one of your books. Can't wait to read the long road home! I am sure it will bring many familar things to us.

Thanks for writing such wonderful books! Truly you have a great gift!

Bridget Jakubowski, VT Sept. 9

Love your books. I'm finishing skyward right now and can't wait to find out how it ends. Keep writing.

Ann Bradshre, NC Sept. 8

I just wanted to let you know how I absolutely LOVED your story, "The Beach House". This was a wonderful "end- of- my -summer", and memorable book!

Susan Meagher, NH Sept. 6

I just wanted to let you know that I have been trying to read every book you have written since I was given the book "The Beach House" from my daughter because she loved it so. I have shared this book with many and now my mom is reading it. I LOVED "The Book Club" and also "Sweetgrass". After reading that one and "The Beach House" made me want to visit your area. Especially since my uncle (Francis (Frank) Bellany) has been a tour guide for years in Charleston. I find such a connection with you and your books where things have happened between my daughter and me that I can't explain. AND now I just got done reading "Skyward" and was shocked that the nurse in the book was from Wallingford, Vermont which is where I grew up and I was born in the Rutland Hospital. When I told Bridget (my daughter) she was shocked again. We keep saying that one of these days we are going to visit the area. I would love to see my Uncle Frank anyway so the trip would be a nice one for sure. I have learned so much from reading your books that I just want to thank you. I'm now starting the book "Girl in the Mirror". I'm on a mission to read all your books and share them with others. Thank again...and May God Bless !!! Sue Medor, West Gloer, Vermont

Sue Medor, VT Sept. 5

I have just finished reading Time Is a River. This is my first Mary Alice Monroe book and I am HOOKED!!! I don't know when I have been so caught up is a story and I am an avid reader. We are getting ready to vacation in the west and my husband ( a beginner ) will be fly fishing. Maybe I should give it a try!
Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Cathie Lefforge, IN Sept. 4

Love all your books!

Bonnie Matthews, VA Sept. 4

Hi,
My name is Eileen Poczekaj, and am a dear friend of the Lindstrom family. My husband John, and I were at Elayna & Bobby's wedding in May, and I believe we met briefly.
I belong to a tiny book club here in northeastern Minnesota, just 50 miles south of the Canadian border. I have, since the wedding, read some of your books, and have suggested that our book club read your story, "The Book Club", as our November read. It will be an interesting topic of discussion for us. Would it be possible for you to autograph my copy or a copy of your book for me? Kindly let me know at your earliest convenience. Thanks ever so much.

Eileen Poczekaj, MN Sept. 3

How do I even begin to tell you how much I treasure your books? I had the pleasure of meeting Patti Callahan Henry several months ago. During our conversation, I mentioned that it was because of you that my husband and I discovered our love of Isle of Palms. So much so that we now have a second home in Mt. Pleasant. Of course, living in Buford, GA - we can't steal away every week-end but my heart still longs for the sway of marsh grass. Even if I'm arriving at two am and instead of turning onto Rifle Range Road, I have a tradition of crossing the IOP Connector and watching for that first flash of moonlight across the water and only then do I know that I'm home. And right now, I'm so very homesick.

Skyward, The Beach House and Swimming Lessons all have places of honor on my book shelves. I have copies in SC, copies in Buford and actually have bought extra to give away to friends when we begin discussing our favorite books. After all, no one is a stranger when it comes to books. Thank you so much!

Angelica Lakhani, GA Sept. 1

Dear Mary Alice, I just finished your new book; "Time Is A River." It was a wonderful book and I shall miss Mia and Stuart and all your characters each day. I absolutely love your books and thank you for writing them. They really bring much joy into my life. At the end of the day, I just love crawling into my bed and picking up my favorite author for a long period of reading. I really cannot pick one that would be my favorite. I loved them all and cannot wait until I hear that you have another one ready for us. Thank you, Mary Alice for using your talent to bring so much happiness to your many fans and avid readers. I loved reading about the turtles, and the raptors, and now fly fishing. There is always lessons to be learned in your books. Just love them. Your biggest fan, Shirley J. Herson

Shirley J. Herson, NY Sept. 1

firstname : Debbie
I just read your latest book and absolutely loved it, until the very end. What's up with Stuart and Mia? I was looking for a happy ending with them, but instead no closure.
Keep on writing. I have read all of your books! Love them all, even your children's book about the turtles!
Thanks!

Debbie Wilson, GA Sept. 1

This is a wonderful website, i thoroughly enjoyed looking at it and was curious to identify a bird i saw in my front yard, come to find out it was a red tailed hawk, thanks again and enjoyed, erica

Erica Lowe, SC Aug. 31

The first book I read was Sweetgrass. I was hooked by the story and your manner in presenting the characters. I was at my local library before I finished it, looking for more books. I am presently reading Skyward. You always weave a story that grabs the reader in. I have passed the first book on to friends and I am looking for the others to add to my own library. I enjoy the chapter beginnings and always try to figure out what you are saying.
It is such a treat to discover a new author and one that bears the honour of being mentioned to family and friends. I admire the work that you are doing with informing the public about loggerhead turtles ( I'd never heard of them) and birds of prey. Sweetgrass also grows close to my home here in Ontario and our natives weave baskets as well. I also learned so much about fly fishing!
Keep writing. I love the stories.
Keep writing

Faye Sinclair Aug. 30

I just read, "Time is a River", and it is wonderful! The best one yet and I have read them all. I am now waiting for her next one.
So, Thank you Mary Alice Monrooe!

Peggy Forsythe, MO Aug. 27

I am a leader of a book club-and we haver been together for 9 years. Your book "The Book Club" has been enjoyed by our group and we see ourselves in various people.

Helen M.Z. Flick, MI Aug. 25

Congratulations to you on another wonderful story. I just finished reading Time is a River. As much as I wanted to finish the book, I still didn't want to. I surely hope you have more in store for Mia and Stuart and Belle as well. Their lives must go on. Please, keep up with your writing. This is my fifth book of yours I have read and they keep getting better. Thanks for being such a great author and my very favorite......

Bess Clarke, MA Aug. 24

Alex Fazekas, OH Aug. 23

I love your books. I moved here last December from California - by myself - and they have been a wonderful guide. I started reading Time is a River right after a weekend trip to Asheville and the mountains and found it so timely. Now I want to try fly fishing!

Gray, SC Aug. 22

Carla Hinson, SC Aug. 22

Has to be your best writting yet!! I was at a Rod Stewart concert (12 rows from the stage) and began thinking "What was Mia up to now?" Now that's powerful writting!! I had to force myself back to the moment and concentrate on such a wonderful gift from my husband...the concert! I love all your books, I can hardly wait to finish them, but yet feel disappointed when I have. Thank you for giving me such enjoyment and taking me to places I wouldn't have known existed!

I just finished reading " Time is a river", what a wonderful story. I couldn't put it down and I was so sorry when I finished it. Please continue with the story of Mia and Stuart, do they get married, have children and what about Belle and Becky? Please - more, more, more---

Hi Mary Alice,

I'm getting excited as my birthday is next month and Billie Jo will be giving me your book as one of my gifts.

I checked with Barnes & Noble and they said you weren't scheduled to talk about your book or sign and I was a bit disappointed.

I know you are busy so I do understand. Maybe you'll be in the upstate at a later time and I can get my book signed then.

Take care.

Hugs,

Mary Ann Barnes

Dear Ms. Monroe, What a pleasure it was meeting you last August 9th at the Charleston Angler and being part of the turtle inventory at nest #9. THANK YOU!!! My family and I had a fabulous vacation and thank you for your graciousness. You are so humble and kind and my heart melted at the experience of meeting you seeing the 22 hatchlings. I will never forget our time at the Isle of Palms and the joy it brought each of us.

I can't wait to read Time is a River. I know it will be dear to my heart too.

Thank you, Becky Monroe

Becky Monroe, OH Aug. 19

Hi Mary Alice:
I read TIME IS A RIVER on the plane from San Francisco to Richmond, VA -- cover to cover. Fabulous! I loved every page, and the cover is so pretty I have it face out on my bookshelf to boot.

Thank you for sharing this story.

Just finished "Time is a River" and realized that I may not be a survivor of cancer, but I am a survivor of life. Beautifully written and a must for all women to discover who they are and how they are impowered to live life for themselves as well as their family. I lived the smells and beauty of the river and felt the peace. Thanks again Mary Alice Monroe. You make me a better woman.

Bobbi Lipcon, CA Aug. 18

I've enjoyed every book of yours that I've read and have just orderd SWIMMING LESSONS and TIME IS A RIVER which I wll look forward to devouring as soon as they arrive.

Being from the SC lowcountry I especially appreciate your dedication to preserving that special place.

Stanley Reahard, SC Aug. 17

I am enjoying Time is a River. Is the town really Saluda, NC? I am a voracious reader (not good at all at writing) and often can not remember if I have read a book while browsing through a book store. An exception though is Sweetgrass. My husband and I were vacationing in Puerto Rico without our children, then ages 4 and 6, and I remained in my room reading your book until it was finished. I never felt like I missed out on any part of 'vacationing' due to the enjoyment of the book. It was the first time that I thought that maybe I should give in to my family's wishes to have a dog. We now have a cockapoo named Emma and she has become like a best friend! Thank you for your wonderful stories.

Sincerely,
Amy Jacob

Amy Jacob, NY Aug. 16

My mom's book club read The Book Club this summer and loved it. She passed it to me and I loved it too! I rushed to the local library and got Sweetgrass and now I'm so sad that the book is over! It was wonderful! I can't wait to read more! You have a talented way of capturing a reader and diving into your character so beautifully! Thanks and I'll be reading more!!!!!

Diane Moffett, GA Aug. 16

I love all your books. Time is a River made me even more homesick for the South. I did not want it to end. I went to the Turtle Center in Jekyll and mentioned your devotion to turtles. They are a fan of yours, also. I have made turtle bags to promote preservation of the beautiful animals. I would love to send you one. You color it yourself...This would be a gift from me as a thank you for your wonderful books. Truly, Molly

Molly Peckls, CA Aug. 15

I was at your book reading today July 6th. I am also a member of the Island turtle team along with my my mother and father. I want to thank you for writing such inspirational books. My long term goal is to become a published author and enjoy reading your novels. You truly paint pictures with words.

Cara Brown, SC Aug. 15

Dear Ms. Monroe, I have never written to an author before. I came across "The Beach House' on the internet looking for sea turtle stories. I can't begin to tell you how delighted I was to find your book and I am just smitten with your writing after reading it. My sister is deep into it now - she has an even deeper affection for the turtles. I have since started on "Swimming Lessons" and it is equally as good if not better - I can't wait to finish it. Thank you so much for your books - I am now an avid fan of yours! I just love the sea turtle information packed in them - what a bonus! I wish I lived closer to one of the hospitals - I'd love to be a volunteer. Thanks again! Sincerely,

Belinda Hilley

Your books are an inspiration! I love the stories and characters. I started with Beach House and am now reading every book you have written. Thank you.

Mary Alice writes so beautifully that when I read her books I don't actually feel like I'm reading, I feel like I'm watching it happen. I can see the places she writes about so vividy, like I have been there myself. And " Time is a River" fills you with strength and hope, with a sense of passion for life. I can not wait to read what she publishes next.

Terri Ehlinger, SC Aug. 11

HI MARY ALICE, I AM NOW READING YOUR LATEST BOOK, "TIME IS A RIVER?" SO FAR, IT IS OUTSTANDING AND I AM LOVING IT SO MUCH. YOU ARE THE VERY BEST, MARY ALICE, AND I SO ENJOY BEING WRAPPED UP IN ONE OF YOUR NOVELS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING MY DAYS WONDERFUL. KEEP THEM COMING, PLEASE. SHIRLEY J. HERSON

Hi Mary Alice,
I'm enjoying Beachhouse! My mother coincidentally, has picked Isle of Palms for the destination with family and friends for her 70th birthday. We have rented a home (from local resident Dick Watson) for the weekend of September 15-22. My brothers and I are throwing the party . None of us have ever been there, and your book has been like a walkthrough before the trip. The hatching of the loggerheads nearly made me cry. The rest of the book has just uplifted me in so many ways.

We'll be doing our party for her at the Peninsula Grille on Friday the 19th and will be doing a beach afternoon/barbecue/book club on Saturday afternoon. Should you be in town and want to join a collection of Jersey,Rhode Island,Ohio Gals and Guys, please come to our barbecue! Any caterer suggestions to cook up something like you had in your book?

PS: My mom has been battling an advanced stage breast cancer for the last three months and some tough chemo. Your book has really hit home in so many ways. Keep up the good work.

Andrea McDonagh, NJ Aug. 10

I just finished the book Swimming Lessons and read The Beach House first as directed by my sister who read them first. I found the books to be so good I escaped into the story and fell in love with all the characters. I lived 5 years in SC and miss it so much. My sister has lived over 30 years in Greenville but spends alot of her time at the beach. Thank-you for a great summer of reading. I look forward to reading many more of your books.

Teri Shemwell, TX Aug. 10

I just finished Time is a River and walked right over to the computer to look up your website just to say what a unusual book. I loved it, loved it and now will set out to read all of your other books..that is how I do it; and I am a BIG reader! I'm excited!

Hi Mary Alice!
So long since I've seen you and I absolutely regret I missed you in Atlanta a few weeks ago for Time is a River. New babies do that to you! Just wanted to drop you a line and say the new book is just beautiful. My husband and kids and I were just on Isle of Palms for a vacation this past week and I thought of you so often. We took an afternoon and visited the aquarium in Charleston where I picked up your companion book to Swimming Lessons-- the journal. It's lovely! I really enjoyed sharing it with my kids while we were there on the island. It made such an impact in their sensitivity to the natural world around them. And it was fun to see them naming things they'd learned about. My son is drawing picture after picture. I may have a little illustrator on my hands!
Thanks for the beautiful books. Hope to see you again soon.
Yours,
Kim Brock

I had the lovely pleasure of meeting Mary Alice Monroe in Sumter, South Carolina on July 29, 2008.

I just wanted her to know what a pleasure it was speaking with her and listening to her speak to the group.

I have finsihed Time is a River and It was one of the best of her books yet.

She inspired me to go back to South Carolina next to see if we are able to see the turtles hatch on Huntington State park at Myrtle beach next year for our vacation.

JoAnn Dougan, NJ Aug. 5

I loved "Time is a River". I have known women like Mia, Belle, Kate and the others in the story. I have been told that I'm a "strong woman" also but I know that being strong just means having the faith to keep on going, no matter what. Diane Strouss

Diane Strouss, MO Aug. 5

Ms. Monroe -

It had been years (especially having limited time to do anything but take care of my children after they were born) since I had experienced the joy of reading a good book until the day I came upon your book "The Beach House". Couldn't put it down. I am a southern gal living in the Pacific NW and it is such a pleaure to get lost in your stories and feel like I am back in the Carolina's. I LOVE your books! Thank you for helping me rediscover my love for reading!

PS: Any plans for another book with Cara Rutlesge, Toy, etc ... Swimming Lessons was wonderful too!

I just finished Time is a River. It was recommended to me because I am a breast cancer survivor and active in helping the newly diagnosed bc patients. I have looked up Casting for a Cure and there is a location in Texas. Thanks for writing such a wonderful book for bc patients and the public. I am going to recommeded it to all bc patients that I come in contact with (which is huge in the DFW TX area) Caro

Just finished Time is a River and I didn't want to quit reading. I have read all your books and it is the same with each of them. I think my soul was put in the wrong place and I belong in the low country. I will be waiting for the next book.
Much appreciation

I have recently found your books -- read first Sweetgrass and loved it and recommended it to my book club members -- then Skyward -- wonderful -- good story and yes, I learned something -- just finished Time is a River -- wow --- what a good story with just the right amount of tension and 'romance' and a satisfactory ending. I will be looking for more at my library and might have to purchase some so they will have all that you have written. What's next? something new soon?

Dear Mary Alice,
I was visiting a dear friend in NC, and she took me to see you at the Winery (Pelican Books). What a thrill to hear you speak and to meet you! I just finished Time is a River. WOW!!! The story is captivating and the characters are rich and unforgettable. Thank you for sharing this time on the river with your readers - for we are really there with you and Mia and Kate! I cannot wait to read all of your other books (this was my first). I am not sure what being a book club member involves, but I am interested if time permits me! Either way, I will keep your website bookmarked and will visit it often. Thank you again for sharing your love of stories and people and nature through your words - it was a great read!!!!

Dear Mary Alice Monroe,

My heart is pumping fast. The Beach House has created a stir in my heart for the Isle of Palms and the loggerhead turtles. I am bringing my kids and grandkids to stay there Aug 9-16 at the Wild Dunes. I just checked your website on appearances and I hope I can meet you at the Charleston Angler. We will be driving 14 hours to get there. The Good Lord willing I hope to arrive in time to meet you. Your writing has stirred in me something very deep and spiritual. I have not read your lastest book yet but I plan to get it while I am in SC. Our prayer is that we actually see a boil and hatching.

Sincerely, Becky Monroe

What a read!!! I can't say enough how much I enjoyed Time is a River. And how much I could relate to Mia in her stuggle to become whole again and better and wiser after a major physical setback. Sweetgrass was my favorite up til now but Time is a River has to be my new favorite. What an art to be able to weave so seamlessly the stories of all the characters so that they flow and intermingle yet still keep Mia's story central. As an unpublished writer I'm especially in awe of Mary Alice Monroe's expertise of her craft. It was such a joy to read. And I learned so much at the same time.
Happy reading,
Lisa

Hello, Mary Alice.I was at your book signing in Edisto Beach, Fri. July 25. I am the 3 year bc survivor who did not know about TIME IS A RIVER until that day. You told me about fly fishing for survivors in North Carolina. I was unable to find the link on your website and hope you can help me. Please send me the web address or let me knlw where to find the link on your site. Thank you very much, Celia Richardson

Mary Alice, Your stop in Vero Beach meant a lot to me. Earlier that day, I had just found out that a dear friend, Ruth, had passed away during the night from lung cancer. The tone of your voice and the positive message you brought were a healing balm for my soul. Thank you, Cathy Brown The Guilt-Free Book Club of Fort Pierce, Fl.

Thank you! I just finished reading Time Is a River. The book is inspiring, the language is exquisite!
I met you at the S.C Medical Allaince meeting in HHI last year. You inspired me to take a step towards a dream that has been simmering for some time. I just started a creative writing class (online). Who knows where it will lead, but I feel as if I have all these words/thoughts/ideas flowing around that are ready to cross the barrier.
Again, thank you for you inspiration.
Blessings,
Paige
PS I feel as if I've been in a river fly fishing over the past few days. :)

I am always reviewing Amazon for writers that I think I might like. I have grown very fond of women southern writers. My favorite being Deborah Smith. My first read of her books was Gentle Rain, then I worked back from there. So far I have read just about all of them. Crossroads Cafe being another favorite.

Saw a review for Time is a River. My daughter is a bookseller at Barnes & Noble. Had her bring me home the book Wednesday evening. Just finished it this morning. This is pretty quick for me, I am a paralegal and usually work about an 8 1/2 to 9 hour day. I absolutely fell in love with this book. I am now making a list of all my friends who I will be passing this book to. Last night I found a used copy of Sweetgrass.

I identified so much with all of the characters in this book from Kate, Mia, Belle, etc. I am 63 (in December). I grew up at the end of a time when women were still struggling for equiality. Great strides have been made. Some women marched, burned bras, etc. Some found their equality very quietly, but the struggle was still very real. I am probably one of those women. I raised 2 daughters by myself, their father deciding to find his own "happiness" elsewhere when they were 2 and 6. I remained single and raised by daughters. They are now 37 and 33. The oldest is am elementary teacher and the other working on her masters in library science. Not sure why I am sharing this with you, except that being single for so long you understand what a struggle it is to come to terms with yourself. Learning to appreciate yourself, your goals and not depending on someone else to complete your life, or make you "happy". I think this is what I took from this book.

I can also probably relate to Kate, Mia and Belle's appreciation of fly-fishing. To some people that would be a nice hobby. But to them, it became a passion that leaves you lacking if you don't have something like that in your life. As you may be able to tell from my email address, mine is quilting.

Okay, sorry about this. Time to get off my soapbox and start Sweetgrass. It's just that the more I thought about your book ---- well-----actually the more I thought about it!!!! Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Thank you so much for introducing me to these wonderful women. You are now ranked with Deborah Smith. That is certainly a compliment.

finished the beach house, really loved the story, you really put your characters feeling and thoughts from the page into reality. i like when i didnt want it to end, and i miss the characters on the pages, almost like saying goodbye to an old friends. i told you when i got the book i would let you know where the bad words were, page 400 and 412 plus one more. One correction , sorry lost track of the page, you mention that summer starts after memorial day and not the equinox, if you meant june 21 that is the first day of summer which is the summer solstice. i just picked up swimming lessons, so i can follow one of the characters. thanks for being such a great writer. stan mintz

Mary Alice, please post a list of your favorite books, especially ones that do as sweet a job as you of making "place" like beach or mountains such an essential and beautiful part of the story, I love that about your writing.
Thank you for your talk in Charlotte, you're an author who should be seen as well as read....not many of those around ;) You're only guy fan, Luke

Luke L, NC July 20

Have not read any of your books as of yet, but plan on purchasing Time is a River soon, along with The Beach House and and its sequel, Swimming Lessons. Can't wait to enjoy them this summer!

Deb Brothers, MD July 18

It was a pleasure meeting and listening to Mary Alice at the Country Bookshop in Southern Pines this evening. I have not read any of her books yet but now have several on my "to read" pile by my bed. I went for inspiration for writing but was inspired to go fishing and take my kids to the beach to look for Loggerhead eggs. Thank you so much for the work you do. Have you seen that movie Loggerheads? An acquaintance of mine produced it, Bonnie Hunt stars in it. It never made it to the big screen but what a great story. Check it out if you haven't. Thanks again and keep writing and inspiring!

Kristin Mueller, NC July 18

Just finished the beach house, really loved the story, you really put your characters feeling and thoughts from the page into reality. i like when i didnt want it to end, and i miss the characters on the pages, almost like saying goodbye to an old friends. i told you when i got the book i would let you know where the bad words were, page 400 and 412 plus one more. One correction , sorry lost track of the page, you mention that summer starts after memorial day and not the equinox, if you meant june 21 that is the first day of summer which is the summer solstice. i just picked up swimming lessons, so i can follow one of the characters. thanks for being such a great writer. stan mintz

I just wanted to share with the author the appreciation I feel for her new novel, Time is a River. I would only set it down so I could extend the reading experience. It was such a rich rewarding novel. I had just returned from Asheville and a short fishing trip with Starr Nolan, who shared with me the news of the book. Needless to say, I came straight home to the book store and purchased it. As a "Casting for Recovery" alumni - what can I say ? Your book is a gift to survivors of breast cancer and a breath of encouragement to the fly fishing women of today. Thank you. Thank you.

Townsend, NC July 18

My mother-in-law and I discovered your books and have loved each and every one. We have both been fortunate enough to visit South Carolina over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed our visits. Your books take us back to happy memories spent on vacations. Thanks for these wonderful books...keep up the good work!

Dear Ms. Monroe, I finished reading 'Time is a River,' yesterday! What a beautiful story! I hope your publisher will send a copy to every cancer treatment center. It is so full of hope and the image of water is very healing! My eldest sister, Vernie, died from IBC. She fought hard, but was not able to conquer the cancer, but yet she lives in my memory and heart. A nice recently has surgery for breast cancer, and it looks very hopeful. I thank every author who gives hope and healing images for all you have cancer, have a loved one you is being treated or has someone who is no longer here in body but is in spirit! Your book leads us to the 'river of life' that flows in our hearts and minds and in the spirits of all who have gone before us. I look forward to your next book. Hopefully Becky, Nada, Bell and the 'gang' will be updated. But then you may have moved on to another body of water and left 'Time is a River' for our imagination. Thank you again for your beautiful words that paint such beautiful pictures. Hope you enjoy fly fishing! If not, you can really tell a tale! Most sincerely, Earlene Hollis

Dear Ms. Monroe; I just finished reading Time is a River and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. As always, your descriptions and colorful words make you feel like you are standing beside that river and hearing the trout jumping out of the water. Thank you for the beautiful stories you tell, not just for entertainment, but also for learning....more about ourselves and more about others. Continued success to you and I anxiously await your next novel. Sincerely Lynda Chapleau Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I finished Time is a River yesterday, and I have to let you know that it has been a very long time since a book has touched me so many ways. Having had Melanoma, and being so worried about survival, I understand all the emotions. But, the pictures I formed from such wonderful writing was a treat that is better than choclate dipped strawberries. Thank you, when you read a book and you can't let it go, it is all due to the writer, and I thank you for the feelings I have over this book. Plus, know I just have to go fly fishing once in my life, it is now on my Bucket List.

Mary Alice, I've read all your books except Girl in the Mirror. I just finished Time is a River and I could not put it down. The characters were so real! I hope you will write a sequel and tell us what happened with Mia and Stuart. As a South Carolina girl, southern literaure is always my read of choice. You are one of the great ones.Have you noticed the sudden interest in the media with fly fishing. The Today Show had a feature on it this weekend.I grew up in Greenville and Charleston, and spent summers as a child in Asheville, so this book was all about home for me. Loved it! My first experience was The Beach House - I could not put it down!!! I have recommended it to everyone. I have read most everything that was available at the local Chapters bookstore. Swimming Lessons and the Book Club was also equally engaging!!! I travelled to North Carolina this past winter just to see the landscape of the low lands. I look forward to Time is the River as a summer read at a cottage on the Ottawa River in my lawn chair. I have never been disappointed!!!

Cathy Oulton, July 10

I found Beach House at a used book store while spending the summer at my mountain cabin in Big Bear Lake. I couldn't put it down and have now ordered more of your books from Amazon. I'll read Swimming lessons next as it is the sequel to Beach House. I can't wait to hear what happens to your very real characters. Keep writing! Mrs. Terry Allen, middle school teacher

I saw the ad for Time is a River this morning on my Shelf Awareness email. Too late I discovered that Ms. Monroe would be in FL. this week. I am on the east coast and wouldn't be able to get there to see her that quickly tomorrow and actually have minor surgery coming up so can't leave but DO have plenty of time to be reading and writing coming up! I wish I had known sooner. I am writing to ask if it is possible to still get a copy of Time is a River? In the past two months, I have been reading and reviewing books when I found out how to receive advanced copies but never saw this book and now wish I had known about it sooner. I have had great joy reading, which is my passion, and writing reviews to post with the authors, publishers, Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, curledup.com, etc. As a 35 year reading teacher, this is a dream come true to be able to do this as I begin my retirement next year. Thank you for considering me for a copy of this fascinating book. I humbly submit this request and have decided it can never hurt to ask. I just thank you for taking time to read my request.

Karen Haney, FL July 10

Thank you for teaching me about turtles, birds of prey and now fly fishing. You beautifully weave together stories that make me feel apart of the adventure

I have just finished Beach House and Swimming Lessons and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I am a second grade teacher at the Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts and our second grade did a major turtle project this past year including a huge performance on the amazing journey of the loggerhead and adopting turtle nests through the Coastal Discovery Museum. I have just discovered that you are friends with Sara Manucy who is my daughter Amy's sister-in-law. I understand that you periodically get together with Sara and I would love to join you at one of your get-togethers. I have become thoroughly enchanted by the turtles! I look forward to reading your other books. Marjorie Milbrandt

Hi Mary Alice, I have been so looking forward to getting my copy of Time is a River! I don't remember if i sent you a email about my trip to Shackelford Banks but i got some beautiful pictures of the wild horses when i went. It was so moving to see them in that enviroment, I was able to get close to them so i got some really good pictures. Will you be doing a book signing in N.C.? Please let me know i would love to be able to go to meet you. Lori

Hi,
I met you at Inlet Affairs on Thursday at the "kick off" of your new book. I mentioned how you helped me understand my friend who is recovering from cancer. You have truly inspired me to love South Carolina for its natural beauty and gifts of nature.
I admire your ability to write and tell stories . I wanted to ask you if you had been affected by "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. Your references to the "power of now" and being in the present certainly gave me clues that you think like those who have learned to awaken and be more conscious.
Thank you for being you. I will look forward to reading more of your books.

Mary Alice,
I just wanted to tell you that I was at the Moveable Feast in Murrells Inlet yesterday, and to let you know how much I enjoyed hearing you speak. Your enthusiasm for all that you espouse ( and there are many!) just sparkles and shines through. This morning I started to read Time is a River, and, although I haven't gotten to much more than a chapter, I know I'm hooked. But, sadly, I must go out and do some food shopping and have to put the book aside! I look forward to getting back to it when I return home.

I've always loved reading, not for just the enjoyment of it, but because of what I have learned...and you are at the top of my list! I never would have thought I would be interested in learning about fly fishing, but here I go...

Dear Mary Alice, I just returned from your talk in Pawleys Island(Litchfield Books). Wonderful, wonderful! So glad I bought Turtle Summer for my new grandniece Isabel (and for myself). Do you have a suggestion for three of us who were sitting together at my table? Where can we learn flyfishing in NC near Ashville? We will be together in Brevard, NC for 4 days in September. Any school or program you might know about. We are not cancer survivors, so can't sign up for Casting for Recovery. Thanks for any info you can pass along. Joyce Santopietro

Hello Mary Alice,
I'm so excited that your new book is soon to be released. Billie Jo is planning to buy it for me for my September birthday ~ only I'm hoping she'll let me have it before then.

I don't see a book signing here in Greenville, SC ~ maybe that will change in the future ~ and if so ~ I hope they will let me bring my book in to be signed.

I saw in Woman's Day Magazine that it was the hot pick for summer reading. I thought that was wonderful and so did Billie Jo.

Have a funfilled and safe 4th of July.

Hugs,

Mary Ann & Billie Jo Barnes

I look forward to owning this new book!

I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED READING Ms. MONROE'S BOOKS.

Lori Willey, LA June 24

I got an uncorrected proof of "Time is a River" and I love it! I never would have considered flyfishing as anything that I would remotely be interested in but somehow, the way it is woven into the story is enticing...

not finished yet, but the Kate Watkins storyline is really compelling...so thank you!

Anne Hunt, NJ

Dear Mrs. Monroe. I just wanted to send you a few words before the summer begins. I`m about to start MY summer holiday, and I`ve already packed a few of your books in my bag. Hopefully I can enjoy both sunshine and your fantastic books=) With these words, I wish you and your family a very nice summer! Best regards, Heidi W. Amundsen, Tromso, North-Norway.

I have just finished reading The Beach House and Swimming Lessons. I so enjoyed both of these books. I am from Augusta, Georgia and have been to beautiful Charleston many times. I love books about the South and was sad today when I finished Swimming Lessons while at the pool with my children. I will be looking for Sweetgrass tomorrow!!! I have actually been looking on the computer for information on the loggerhead and leatherback turtles. I find them both fascinating. Thanks for the great reads. Kim

I just finished reading The Beach House. It is the first book of yours that I have read. I started it because I am from Charleston originally. Dear Ms. Monroe: I had the pleasure of reading all your "low country" books and enjoyed every one of them. Last week we visited the Birds of Prey Center and met your friend and fellow turtle lady, Mary. We also checked out the nest at station 28 on Sullivan's Island. On our way down route 17, we also had a very pleasant talk with one of the ladies who weave the sweetgrass baskets and left with an armful of goodies from her. So I thank you for pointing us in that direction. It was just great! I look forward to your next book with great anticipation.

You know how much I have loved your books. I am looking forward to Time is a River. Is there any chance you have any review copies available? I am posting reviews on Amazon where I am a top 1000 reviewer, also have my own blog, and am the member of several online bookgroups as well as a face-to-face book group. Anyway I would love the opportunity to read this early it it's possible -- if not, you can rest assured I will be picking up a copy as soon as I can! Thanks for the continued wonderful hours of reading pleasure you've given over the years.

I really love your books because it is about the South which I never visit BUT you wrote about the southern environment in loud and clear message that there is a need for helping the turtles and birds due to environment and buildings that are build near those two species that endanger their lives and their future generations that many people are not aware of. I look forward your upcoming books in few months. Keep going:) !!

Your writing, your subject material, your characters - leave me in awe. Being A native of South Carolina makes these wonderful books so real to me I truly got caught up in them as if I were there every second of every word. Wolud love to see The Beach House And Swimming Lessons made into a movie. Thank You Mrs. Monroe For the insight to write such Wonderful and Inspiring Tales. And to think a wonder of the sea inspired you. Would love to see a sequel to Swimming Lessons

Greetings Mrs. Monroe. I am writing to thank you for your contribution to Hunter Wentworth's documentary "The Written Path" and praise you for your articulate and charming dialog. I found you to be the epitome of the southern belle. You are a credit to the south and I'm sure to American literature as well. I'd also like to thank you for your praise for Jim Rigney's "Wheel of Time" series as he is and likely will always be my favorite author. I intend to pick up something of yours the next time I'm at Barnes and Noble. I'm sure I'll be pleased if your writing is half as charming as you are yourself. Kudos Miss Mary Alice and keep up the good works. Sincerely, Brad Harger

I am the "displaced" single Texas Mom who has been considering moving back home to South Caroline for years, and now finally have the courage to pack up and do it.

You could probably write a story about it. My 13 year old daughter has decided she wants to go permanently live with her Dad and Stepmother, and so after a couple of job considerations in both North and South Carolina, I am planning to move back home next year.

I supposed that is one the reasons I love your books, because the female characters are usually "wrestling" with a particular situation that somehow works out better than expected.

Thank you for the realness of your characters, and the hint of pine trees, coastal surf, sweetgrass, and a real connection to what makes the Carolinas so special!

Am looking forward to Time is a River, but I have to tell you that the Beach House and Skyward were my two favorite books.

Blessings,
Heidi Heard-Davis

Hi Mary Alice,

Your web site is so well done!!! It is almost as good as seeing you in person again.

I do hope that you remember meeting me when you were at Davis Kidd in Memphis during your 2005 book tour. We had a nice visit and I took your pic on my camera phone.

At that time, I recall telling you how much I have been wanting to visit the Charleston area. A lot of this desire stems from reading your fabulous books.

Anyway, this dream is finally becoming reality as I will be in the Charleston area with a friend of mine (Phyllis) next week. Phyllis just completed her first nursing class after being away from school for more than 15 years!
She is ready for a school break and we are both looking forward to a break away from the husbands ; > We are staying in a cabin at Edisto State Beach Park.

Trying to find info as to if we will be able to see any turtle hatchings while we are there. Can you please advise on this?

I have just finished reading Skyward, Beach House and Swimming Lessons and Sweetgrass; they are all wonderful! I could have just kept reading on and on after Swimming Lessons. I hope there may be a sequel to it. I absolutely love your work and will be searching for your other titles this week! Thank you so much for your informative novels! I have learned many things I did not know about birds of prey and turtles.

I read your first book, Sykyward, and really enjoyed it. I just finished Girl in the Mirror and The Beach House and loved them. I'm traveling to S.C., Charleston, this summer and staying at a house on Folly Beach. I want to visit Isle of Palms, too, the setting of your book. I'm looking forward to reading more of your books, especially the new one, follow-up to The Beach House. You're a great writer and I enjoyed learning about the turtles and birds of prey. I'm passing the names of your books onto my sisters and friends.

Presently, I am trying to see how to reach Ms. Monroe to ask her to appear as the keynote speaker for our 2009 Ladies' Spring Tea here in Monroe sponsored by the Friends of Union County Libraries. We are about to have our 3rd Spring Tea on 4/16 with Cassandra King as speaker. Last year we had Dorothea Benton Frank, and the first year we had Mary Kay Andrews. Could you contact me to let me know your requirements and availability? Thank you, Sue Preslar, Friends of Union County Libraries

I spoke to my friend Linda and told her about you. She will come and hear you in Asheville. It was so great meeting you. I am a passionate reader and I am glad there are passionate writers like you to make our world what it is. Thank you, Karin

Dear Mary Alice Monroe:

We?re taking matters into our own hands here at the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library and we?re hoping you can help.

As an author and a reader I?m sure you are aware of the recent cuts in library funding. Our library excels at providing resources and programs that enhance the lives of our patrons and broadens the horizons of our community. The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Foundation supports the library?s ability to serve our community with additional funding for the library.

This September 6, we are having our third annual Dessert Extravaganza silent-auction fund-raiser with our board of trustees. We pulled a list of our library?s 25 most popular authors and you are on that list. We are asking you, as one of our most popular authors, to donate an autographed copy of a book to be auctioned that night. It would be highlighted as a featured item, and previewed in advertising for the event.

We received several contributions from authors last year and these were very successful auction items. We sincerely believe that a contribution from you would greatly help us this year.

Would you please send an autographed copy of your book to: Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library
Ann L. Malthaner
3512 Darrow Road
Stow, OH 44224

I can not tell you how honored we would be to receive such a gift. Please accept our sincere thank you for helping us help the patrons of the Stow-Munroe Falls community.

Ruth Reedy, Stow-Munroe Public Library, OH

I love reading your books and have just finished Swimming Lessons. I was surprised to read, "Toy pulled herself up to sit Indian style on the cool, damp sand." It's page 401 in the hardback. Years ago when I worked with children and we were teaching diversity, we taught the children to sit "cross legged" and refrained from saying Indian style. I know this is a recent book and I was just surprised by the description. Warm regards, Alice Chenault

Hi Mary Alice...You will remember me as the TV talk show lady from Myrtle Beach that you met at the B&N store in Mt. Pleasant when the parakeet flew into the window and you and I were the only ones who cared! Just wanted you to know that your publisher sent me a copy of TIME IS A RIVER and I LOVED it! It is so unlike everything else you have done...mountains vs. sea, fly fishing vs turtle rescue!!! Just adore all your books. Best wishes...I know when it hits the stores others will adore it too!!!!! Diane DeVaughn Stokes

Although a native New Yorker, my heart is in South Carolina. My husband, two children, and I have recently built a home on John's Island and find it very difficult to return to NY. Your book Beach House captured my heart and my love for the islands of South Carolina. Thank you. I look forward to reading Swimming Lessons.

Annmarie Lentini, NY

I got an uncorrected proof of "TIME IS A RIVER" and I love it! I never would have considered flyfishing as anything that I would remotely be interested in but somehow, the way it is woven into the story is enticing...

not finished yet, but the Kate Watkins storyline is really compelling...so thank you!

Anne Hunt, NJ March 31

Until then. Have a good day. Hugs, Mary Ann

Hi Mary Alice You may not remember me but I worked with Markus a number at years during his time at IJR. I was the training director during most of that. Markus was the best boss i ever had and please wish him well for me. However, I mostly wanted to write to you about your books. I've read most of your recent ones and can't tell you how much i've enjoyed them. I just finished The Beach House and enjoyed it in so many ways. I picked it up last weekend because its been such a god-awful long winter back here in the midwest and i needed something to transport me to summer. It certainly did the trick. Of course, i also found many parallels in my own family with this and found myself being quite thoughtful. I'm sending it on to my mother in FL as she will enjoy it too. Anyway, keep writing, take care, and hi to markus for me!

I just finished reading SWEETGRASS. I commend you highly. I miss Mama June, Morgan and the others so much. I hope their will be a sequel. I am also a published author. I curently have 2 published, with the third to be out later this yer. The last two books are about my life. YES I CAN! covers the first 8 years in learning to live with Cerebral Palsy and YES I CAN TOO! is the sequel to YES I CAN!, which I am finishing up. I was wondering if, in your busy schedule, you would be willing to read my manuscript and write a blurb for the back cover of my book. I learned today that you are the next door neighbor to my sister's best friend, Paula. My sister is Karen Weihs. I hope to hear from you soon and I wish you all the best in your writing endeavors. I know it is long, hard work. My e-mail address is biblereader@knology.net. My telephone number is 334-356-1456. It would mean the world to have you read my manuscript. DEAR MARY ALICE, I HAVE WRITTEN TO YOU SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. I JUST FINISHED READING "SWIMMING LESSONS!!" IT WAS AS WONDERFUL A BOOK AS "THE BEACH HOUSE!. I HAD READ "SWEETGRASS" BEFORE THIS ONE. Molly Patrick, WI Feb. 13

I've been reading 3-5 books weekly for a number of years. I just finished reading 'The Beach House' - the first of your books I've read. I've never written or e-mailed an author before. I just wanted to share with you how beautifully touching it was. It not only warmed my heart, but somehow touched my soul. My great-grandmother raised my mother and she died of cancer many, many years ago. Before her death she insisted that Mom and her talk about her upcoming death. She told my mother that she couldn't live one more day and ever be as sad as she had ever been in her life, nor could she live one more day and ever be as happy as she had been in her life. Of course, Mom didn't want to hear any of that, but at the funeral she realized that her grandmother had given a most special gift - one Mom gave to me recently. Be well and I'll search out more of your books. Thanks for the pleasure.

Jacquelyn Cannon, FL Feb. 12

I would just like to thank you for your wonderful books. Because of them, I am currently staying on The Isle of Palms for a weeks vacation. I can't believe how beautiful and peaceful it is here, and it makes me smile to realize that I could be walking the same stretch of beach as Miss Lovie, Cara and Toy! Because of the wonderful way you describle the beauty of the area, and the history of the loggerheads and sweetgrass basket making, I have been able to appriciate so much of what I am seeing here. Thanks again....I can't wait for your next book to be released. A fan from Toronto, Canada Lynda Chapleau

Dear Mary Alice, I dearly LOVE each of your books and tell everyone about them. I am so excited that there will be another book in May! I have one suggestion. I used to be an editor for my husband who was a syndicated newspaper columnist. There are numerous mistakes in your books that should have been caught by a good editor. Maybe I notice them because it's what I used to do but it is distracting. Here is an example. In your book, "Sweetgrass" on page 259, soft cover, near the bottom of the page: Nona slowly dragged herself to a stand, grunting with the re still there, aren't they?" This paragraph made no sense to me because it was so incomplete. Just thought you might want to consider speaking to your editor about mistakes like this. Thank you for your wonderful talent Mary Alice. I'm thrilled to have discovered your books!! Ann

Ann Hudak, NC Feb. 7

Your writing is so eloquently vivid -- I can almost smell the lowcountry. Thank you -

Rebecca Lundy, SC Jan. 28

I enjoyed reading Beach House, Swimming Lessons and Skyward so very much. I do hope that you will write a sequel to these books. I also read Sweet Grass, and am now reading Girl In the Mirror, and have enjoyed these also. However, the first three books mentioned were my favorites. I found reading about the rescue of wild life very interesting.I hope that you will write more of these. I am 80 years old, live in adult community and belong to a book club here. Several of my friends have also been enjoying your books. I don't know why we haven't discovered your books sooner.

We would love for you to be our guest at our Spring Author's Luncheon for First Book on April 12 (or another date that might suite you). We would love to have you and your photographer discuss the new turtle book for children. Thank you so much for considering! Mona Prufer

Ms. Monroe, I just finished "Beach House," and adored the novel, not wanting to finish it, yet was able to begin "Swimming Lessons" immediately. As a conservationist, and one who cares about the survival of the loggerheads, you may be familiar with the proposed massive development on Jekyll Island, GA. So much is at stake, if you are interested, please visit www.savejekyllisland.org. It is a comprehensive website regarding protecting Jekyll Island. Support from persons from all over is currently needed. Sincerely, Vicki Miller Decatur, GA

I have really enjoyed being able to read so many of your books as it is fun to see all the different facets of your writing. Billie Jo thinks there is just no author like you ~ she said she never thought an author would be so down to earth and so reachable. Thank you again Mary Alice and I look forward to your next novel and hopefully another trip to Barnes & Nobles in Greenville for a talk/book signing. Have a nice day. Hugs/Love, Mary Ann Barnes

Dear Ms/Mrs Monroe. My name is Heidi Wikstad Amundsen, and I live in Tromsoe, North-Norway. I love reading books, and the last years, I`ve read 3 of your books (Turtle summer,The Book Club and Sweetgrass)several times. I just finished reading "The Book Club", and I feel you have reached the reader in a very special way. Many things in this book makes you think twice about the meaning of life. I`ve totally fallen in love with your books, so next time I see one of your books at the store, I`ll buy it! Best regards, Heidi Wikstad Amundsen,Norway.

I was wondering if any or all or your books are on tape for the visually impaired. I have a friend that was an avid reader but can no longer read but likes to listen to books on tape. I would like very much to be able to recommend your books to her. By the way, I have been to two of your book signings and have copies of all of your books. Keep the good books coming!!! Thank you

Barbara Dunlap, GA Jan. 4

I enjoy your books because of the mixture of environmental issues and your good writing. If more writers would write their fiction and put environmental issues in it - perhaps more people would be informed. I think it is a great idea what you are doing.
