I just finished Time is a River. It was my first Mary Alice Monroe book. I LOVED IT!! I will now read all of your work!! Thank you so much for this wonderful book. I could not wait to pick it back up again. I even pressed my luck with taking an extra minute or two on my breaks at work, just to finish a page!! haha. Thank you so much. I look forward to reading all of your other books.
Love all of your Books!
Love your books! Just recently, my sister & I both read "Swimming Lessons" and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, did we miss it or did you not explain about floaters? Big Girl recovered from it but we wondered what causes the problem. We've just started doing a little research about it but haven't uncovered much information yet. We'd love to read more "turtle" books! Thanks!
I just LOVE LOVE LOVE your books!! I read The Beach House and I was hooked!!As a matter of fact I passed it on to my 2 daughters to read...wonderfully warm, heart wrenchingly real and leaves you with a different view on life that somehow would never have materialized had I not read it. Thank you so much!! Now I am looking for all your books.... just finished Swimming Lessons,Time is a River, Last Light over Carolina and now I have started The Book Club....you are additive!! Can't wait to read all of them but want to savor them too. Thanks again!!!
I have never been an avid reader but I purchased "Last Light over Carolina" while on vacation and was hooked. I loved this book. So then I purchased "Four Season" and "Swimming Lessons". I read "Four Seasons" first and read it in a few days. I loved the story line and all the characters with all the twists and turns. Swimming Lessons touched my heart and I am intrigued by sea turtles. I think there needs to be a sequel so we can all celebrate Ethan, Toy and Little Lovie becoming a family, along with all the others including the sea turtles. Thanks
Dear Mary, I just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed reading your novels: The Beach House, Swimming Lessons, and Time is a River. I love all the different aged women, in various stages of their lives, who make friends with each other and share their strengths and love. I also enjoy your knowledge and love of nature. I didn't even know what a loggerhead is until I read your books (and I have been very concerned about them since this oil spill disaster occurred). I also have a much greater understanding of the spirituality of fly fishing which, I believe, is very similar to gardening and the cycle of life within it. Thank-you so much for sharing your stories with us, your readers. I intend to read every single one of your books and am recommending them to my friends. I have discovered so many wonderful women writers over this past 5 years since our son left home to begin his own adventure in life. All of these women, yourself included, have helped me go through this big transition in my life, along with menopause, an aging Mother, etc. The stories that excellent writers create have so much power to give strength and knowledge to their readers. Thank-you. Linda R. Floyd, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada
I have to start out by saying I came across your books lately and loved The Beach House and Swimming Lessons! I love all the lowcountry books because my family vacations there every two years. However, I am a proofreader and was surprised to see so many errors, obviously ones the publisher had missed. I know I found 3 near the beginning of the book, but then wrote down some of them from the end. Let me know if you're interested in finding what pages.
Dear Ms. Monroe, I am the Texas Mom who is originally from South Carolina (born in North Carolina), and knows all too well the rich history of the stories you write. You write with an authenticity, that is rare these days, and your verbal "pictures" are vivid and real. I have considered for a few years now, to try my hand at writing short stories. I hear it said that every person has "one good book" in them, so I am going to see if this is true! If you should have a novice writer's workshop, somewhere in Texas (i.e., at a bookstore), I would appreciate being informed of it. Your writing style is one of my favorites, and I would hope to be able to write half as well as you do. Blessings~ Heidi Heard Davis, Austin, Texas
My husband and I just returned from a visit to his mom's house in Mt. Pleasant, SC. While there two weeks ago this Friday, we had the pleasure of visiting the Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, just down the road from her house. It was the most exciting day for my husband and I. We had the pleasure of witnessing the release of an Eagle that was rehabilitated by the center, and it was incredible. I took tons of pictures and have told everyone they should visit if in the area. Many years ago I read your book Skyward and was so happy to finally see the center for myself. I love all your books and when I go for a visit I can see all the charactors coming to life in the real places: the Sweetgrass basket makers along Hwy 17, Sullivans Island, and our favorite beach on IOP. I haven't witnessed the sea turtles yet, but hopefully one day I will. Thanks for all the great stories...I think I will go and read them all all over again! Judi
You've done it again :) I just finished reading Last Light Over Carolina while vacationing at Hunting Is. Lovely story. I could hear your voice as you read the excerpts at Soby's in Greenville. You are a delight! I buy local shrimp now! (as local as I can get it here in Greenville anyway). My best, Paige
I have read all of the novels so far and have enjoyed every one. I love how the author includes true life culture in the books and gives the reader some fiction to keep the story flowing. love them all.
Mary Alice, Thank you so much for coming to Aiken,SC. After hearing you talk about the loggerhead turtles and reading The Beach House and Swimming Lessons I have so much more knowledge as well as a genuine love for the beautiful turtles. Near our place on Hilton Head Island are two nests. I just hope I am there when they hatch.Thank you for writing these books to educate us on things we need to be aware of on our beautiful South Carolina coast. Keep on writing, we always eagerly await a new Mary Alice Monroe novel. With Warm Regards, Sandra Thomas
I moved last summer and needed something to pass time while hanging out at the pool. I began reading and now it has become second nature to me. Growing up, I really did not like to read. I purchased some books from an online bookstore and in my purchase was "Time is a River". I LOVED IT! and now am reading the rest of Mary Alice's books. I've read The Beach House, Swimming Lessons, Sweetgrass. My son has been on a baseball team with Mary Alice's bestfriend's grandson - Zach G. It's a small world after all. I'm ordering the rest of the books to complete my collection. Can't wait until they come in. Thanks so much! Especially love the books about the SC Low Country. I grew up in a small town in SC - called Westminster. It's in Oconee County in the northwest part of the state, close to the GA state line.
It was a pleasure meeting you in Mt. Pleasant. I still think what a small world that we both know Eddie. I just finished LLOC and loved it. I learned more about the shrimping business. Though Carolina was the main character, I feel Bud made the book less of a chick book. Keep up the good work and I'll be reading some of your other books.
South Carolina is my favorite place on earth!!! I have family on Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, James Island, and in Mt. Pleasant. I go once a year to visit and stay on Isle of Palms. I love that magical place!!! Your books take me there in between visits.
I wish to thank you for awakening my interest in flyfishing. I am a two time breast cancer survivor who has happily been selected to attend the casting for recovery event at Skytop Lodge in September. None of this would have happened had I not picked up "Time is a River" for beach reading. I reside in Waveland MS, ground zero for Hurricane Katrina and I am so looking forward to the experience. I am currently reading "The Four Seasons" but unfortunately I can't read it on the beach. Our beaches are closed due to the oil. I guess it will now be my porch reading! Again thank you for the insight and also for your comments on the oil spill. Life truly is a beach. Sometimes it just needs a little help. Sincerely, Debbie Davis
Dear Mary Alice, I just finished and LOVED Last Light Over Carolina. I am a South Carolina history teacher, a nature lover, and avid reader of fiction. Thank you for writing a beautiful piece of fiction that tells the story of South Carolina's low country shrimpers so well. I fell in love with Carolina and Bud and could not put the book down.
My name is Nan Stafford and I recently opened a handcrafted gift shop on Hilton Head Island in Main Street Village (Hilton Head Plantation). I thought you may like to know that you inspired me through reading your book The Beach House. The store is called Loggerheads...fine crafts from near and far. We sell all hand crafted things from the US, Canada, and third world countries. We are also assisting the Sea Coast Discovery Museum by promoting awareness of the loggerhead. I have always loved loggerheads but I feel head over heals in love after reading your book. Thank you! Also, a lady named Kim Stokes came in my store this week. She suggested that I contact you to tell you my story. Apparently you know her through her setting up book signings for you??? I am interested to see what the possibility would be to sell your book for children about the loggerheads in my store. I think it would be a wonderful way to further promote awareness. Thank you again for your inspiration! Nan Stafford
I'm with the Chas. Co Public Lib. We are doing a weekly feature on our facebook page called "Charleston Reads! What locals are reading..." We would love to share what you are reading if you would like to participate. You could just provide the book title or you could include a sentence or two about the book. Mayor Riley was our first reader...most recently Rob Fowler shared his book. Thanks for considering! Becky
Hi Mary Alice, I just wanted to say hello. I hope you will be releasing a new book soon. I always look forward to a new book from you. Billie Jo said to tell you hello and she hopes that you will speak again soon at a local Barnes & Nobles in the Greenville, SC area so she can bring me and we can listen to your talk. Take care. Hugs/Love, Mary Ann Barnes
I just finished The Beach House and I loved it! Will be on the lookout for more of your writing. It was perfect on he timing because of the Fourth of July. My parents are getting older(as am I), and it rang a lot of my bells and allowed me to shed some needed tears as well. Thanks again, Karen
I fell in love with your books after the first one I read which was Beach House. I then passed it on to anyone I knew who read. When I need a read that is about women who show their strength in crisis, I turn to your stories. I have recommended your books to family members and friends because they ring true. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I enjoyed your interview on SCCTV. Though I have not read any of your novels, that will change. You seem like my kind of author. Right now, I am in the process of trying to get a novel published. It is the second of two completed novels, the first is set in Charleston, a place a visited and fell in love with. I'm looking forward to reading your books. Regards, Jo Phillips
Just found your book Sweetgrass and finished it! Absolutely loved it! Can't wait to go to our bookstore and load up on the rest of your novels. Keep them coming!
I met you at Angela's shower and shortly afterwards I began reading your books--four to date. My husband Michael is also hooked, having read Beach House and Swimming Lessons.
I love your books! I'm just starting the "Last Light over Carolina". I am 61 years old and have just become an avid reader. I happened to pick up "The Four Season" at Sam's Club about a year ago. Once I started reading, it was hard to put it down. I have read all of your books and look forward to reading this new one. I look forward to many more!! Thank You, Kay Gardner, Greenville, NC
I have been enjoying following you on FaceBook and thoroughly enjoyed reading Time Is A River. Beach House will be next. I thought you might be interested in knowing that my sister wrote a very nice review of Time Is A River. http://www.squidoo.com/time-is-a-river
awesome
Thank you for signing my copy of "Sweetgrass" while you were in Snellville, Ga. I live on Long Island and sent my sister in law to see you. We have a place on Seabrook and your books bring me back to my home away from home. Since your characters come alive for me, I never want the books to end. After reading "Last Light Over Carolina", I will never again eat shrimp (my favorite), without thinking of the work and hardship involved bringing them to our table. Thank you, again, for your words and all your conservation work.

I love your books. I share them with my closest friends because I want them to share in the joy. Thank you.
Not being a reader, my mother suggested me to read The Beach House and oh my I was hooked. I enjoyed it so much and I have read all of your books and I am anxiously waiting a new one:0) My daughter to this day can't believe I read a book in a day and a half- and even in a hotel reading by the light of my cell phone. I am an avid lover of turtles and can't wait until your visit to Aiken, SC. Happy Writing and I'll be waiting for another wonderful book!
Given your dedication to understanding and preserving nature, reading your work makes me especially sad during the oil spill news. But/and you made me renew my desire to learn to fly fish! Thanks, mucho!
Mary Alice,
I enjoyed seeing you in Greenville this week! You are an inspiration. I can't wait to read Last Light Over Carolina. As I was leaving the Book a Lunch event, I thought about your amazing writing process. How do you keep it all organized (interviews, research, thoughts, dreams)?
Thanks for sharing your work with us!
Love to the turtles,
Paige
I met you today in Greenville and was so pleased to share with you the impact your books have had on my family, especially my daughter Laura. Today you recommended the movie Dolphins. Lo and behold I read in the news on-line that Japan has banned the movie. Another "shaman" moment -- very timely!
My mother would like to come with Laura to meet you on IOP sometime.
You did "light one candle."
If possible I would like to be notified via email when you have a date for your next publication. Not re-published books from an earlier time, just something newly written.
I find myself buying something that looks new (i.e. new cover) only to find that it had come out several years back. My fault, as I did not look to see when originally published.
I realize you cannot possibly write as fast as 'we' read but would appreciate having my email address on you list of those anxiously awaiting your next book!
Thanks so much,
Sydney
LOVE your books Mary Alice!...I'm also a huge fan of your friend Diane Chamberlain and blog with her all the time...I'm an artist and appreciate anything and everything in nature so you're books have attracted me for years...I live in Iowa but am a lover of the sea so the locale of most your books attracted me a long time ago...same with Diane's...one day by goal is to visit the Outer Banks and maybe I'll be able to meet you and Diane at a booksigning.
I love our home state stories!Thank you so much!I am also a turtle lover.47 years of watching them at Edisto caused that.Thank you so very much!!
Enjoyed your website. Just found out about you. Am planning to order Last Light over Carolina right now. It sounds like it'll be a good book! Looking forward to reading it. Have a great summer!
I love your books! Your writing style is wonderful the way you weave the environmental aspects through the lives of the characters and their relationships! Keep writing!!!
I have just finished reading "The Four Seasons" and being a Catholic birth mother in the late 60's I could totally related to Jilly. My son & I were reunited a few years ago and it has been a full circle in my life! I am really blessed! I have read some of your other books and love the ones with the turtles as I am also fascinated with them and South Carolina. I have never been there but hopefully someday that dream will come too. Thank you so much for your writing!!
Ms Monroe, it was just by chance that I stumbled upon your book, The Beach House, at a fund raiser book sale to support Relay for Life at the hospital where I work. WOW, I am the lucky one! I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. I found myself crying through several chapters. Your beautiful writing captured my heart and this year when I take my annual vacation to Garden City Beach, the only books in my beach bag will be yours!
One of my favorite books of all time-THE BOOK CLUB-I chose it as the first book for my email book club and will use it eventually in my book club I am beginning in my home this fall. Thank you.
I LOVE YOUR BOOKS I HAVE READ SIX ALREADY AND WOULD LOVE TO READ MORE.
Dear Ms. Monroe: I am sorry to repeat a statement all your fans give you but I have read all your books and always wait impatiently for a new book. I have searched every library in my area for anything with your name on it. O.K., I swear, I am not a stalker....just a lover of books and great authors like yourself. Your stories are so full of characters to love and communities to wish to move to. I am currently reading "Time is a River" and it brings up so many emotions. Although none of my family members had breast cancer, I have lost my g.mother, my mother, my brother, my oldest sister to cancer and now my only other surviving sister is fighting her second bout of colon cancer. I am selfishly scared of losing her and being the only family member left. So your book is definitely bringing up tears....but at the same time much hope for Mia and Stuart. I have often thought about putting my family's fight and losses in a book but have no idea how to start. I was considered quite the writer in college, but making up stories for class is different than putting my family sorrows on paper. I know you have most likely had a gazillion people ask you this, but any suggestions about writing my story? :) Take care, keep up the great writing and I am looking forward to your past books and your future book coming out and I will be there buying them! I can't wait.
I live out on Fripp Island and I am concerned about the people who live here and don't understand the environment in which they live. Many of them have come from big cities are annoyed by the wildlife. In particular, the racoons, alligators, snakes and quite frankly, everything they are afraid of. I think most of them are just plain ignorant and need someone like yourself who has a wonderful environmental background and a name. They won't listen to someone like myself, who is just a concerned creature of the planet, but they need someone who is important enough, someone they respect and that someone is you. In that light, I would love for you to come to one of our Fripp Island Audubon meetings to discuss the importance of the fragile environment in which we live. The importance of every animal, plant life, etc. and how they all fit in to the scheme of things. I can talk until I am blue in the face, and I am just unpopular because I interfere with the human element. So, I really feel that you could make the difference, somebody who is educated and understands how we all need to work together. I would love for you to come one of our Audubon meetings on Fripp when you can make it. I think it would make a tremendous difference in the way people view nature. Instead of being annoyed at the racoon pooping on the deck, they may learn to live with all the animals of the planet. I hope that you can see fit to include us in your schedule and if you can, let me know and I will hook you up with the president of the Audubon club. I appreciate your time and I hope I haven't rambled, I just get so frustrated by man's ignorance of their surroundings and hope that you will be able to shed some light on an otherwise dark mind of man. Thanks
Hi, I am a literacy teacher in Beaufort County. We are opening a new school, Pritchardville, Elem.! It is an exciting time. Pritchardville is very close to Bluffton, SC. Our mascot will be the sea turtle. I find myself purchasing any and all things related to sea turtles. I want my reading room to be fun and engaging. I am wondering do you make school visits? I would love to have you come to our school and talk about sea turtles and your book on the topic. I believe we have the best mascot a school can have and my hope is our students learn all about sea turtles and how amazing they are. We are blending schools to make ours and having a sense of belonging can come from knowing about your mascot. Please let me know if you are available to visit schools and speak. Thank you, Joy Mosca
Hi Mary Alice! I have written you a few times and hope to get out there to visit when a turtle nest boils like last summer. My sister is Susan Daley one of the Turtle Team volunteers and we met during the inventory of her nest. I just wanted you to know that I am about to begin my summer tradition of reading your book, The Beach House! I read it every summer along with others. I will begin on Memorial Day weekend, the kickoff of summer. I have purchased and read every book you've written...and I will reread your latest this summer, too! My sister gave me an autographed copy of it when I visited last summer. I am making a donation to the turtle hospital through your website and would love to be part of any fundraiser you are having to help the turtle rescue team so let me know of any if you think about it. I wish i lived there and could help more but this is one way i can help in a small way. Have a great summer!! Lauren
I visited Charleston last year and fell in love with the Isle of Palms and everything around that area. Then I picked up The Beach House to read and could not put it down..I'm now reading Sweetgrass and you have now become one of my favorite authors. Thanks for bringing South Carolina's beauty into your stories. I can't wait to read your new book. I wish I would have purchased one of the beautiful sweetgrass baskets when I was there. I guess I have to go back.
PLEASE give us another beach book !!! I am so in love with the beach families and the logger head turtles.....don't keep us waiting.
I found "Sweetgrass" this month when the bookmobile came to my apt. building last month. I read and re-read it. The story and characters are incredibly well written! I love a story I can 'get lost' in and the revelations the family reached touched me deeply. I ordered and started reading 'Skyward' this month and also ordered and received 'The Beach House' and the 'The Book Club'. I look forward to more of your books and I wish you all the best!
I just finished reading Time is a River. I enjoyed every bit of it and it truly warmed my heart. I do not know of too many books that deal with those who struggle with breast cancer or other serious diagnosis, and it is a comfort to know which stories touch on the struggles that people go through and their journey of surviving.
So far I have enjoyed three of your books, and will probably search out the rest, but having just finished "The Beach House", I just had to ask you why you kept the sun setting in the Atlantic through the whole book. At first this made me think the house was on the landward side of the island, and caused no end of mental confusion. I'm sure someone else has already pointed this out to you, but surely some editor should have caught it before publication?
I own a small bookstore on the Eastern Shore of VA. A customer has been trying to find a HC copy of Beach House for a gift, not realizing that it's only in paper (or LP). Might we purchase a signed copy from you that she can give in place of a hardcover version? Thanks, Mary
My daughter & son-in-law are thinking of taking a trip to South Carolina sometime. When do the turtles hatch & are visitors allowed to see them if they are there? I love all your books, wish you would do an appearence in Illinois, Indiana or Wisconsin sometime. Keep writing. Diana Keiss
I just recently discovered your books. I am reading Sweetgrass now. This is my third book. I have to say I love all of them so far and am looking forward to reading more.
Thank you for writing these great books. They have been the anchor that holds me down when I feel like a ship blown to sea. Please continue to write many. Your work is much more important than you could ever imagine. It brings me calm at night when my head is full of school and children as I am a single mom that retuned to school. Thank you for all you do.
I will be one in sixty to see you on April 22nd for your reading of Last Light Over Carolina. So excited!!!
Dear Mary Alice, I sat next to you on the flight today from Charlotte to Ft. Myers. It was a true delight to meet you and to answer your questions regarding my Kindle. I will be buying your books via Amazon for my little reading toy! Gayle
I was reading your book Swimming Lessons and was intrigued by the description of a camera on page 183. Did you have a specific camera in mind when you did this or was it a composite of various ones? I am interested in pursuing my photo lessons and am looking for help! Sincerely, Fiona
I have enjoyed your books. I never really read much but when I found your books I was hooked. I have read 5 and I'm on "The Book Club" book and it's been so neat to have found your books. I so love them. Keep writing they have really helped my reading skills and me in so many ways, I really enjoy them. Sincerly, Vicki
LOVED The Beach House & want to read the rest of your books. I acquired this by chance at a book sale in a library and loved every minute of it.
I just recieved Turtle Summer in the mail from Amazon. It makes me even more excited about our trip to Wild Dunes this summer. My 4 year old loved it and I'm sure the bigger girls will too. We will for sure take it along to help identify shells and birds. As I was planning our trip to South Carolina, I did a google search for sea turtles and SC and somehow came up with your name. I am waiting to read The Beach House while on the plane and while we are there.
I have just finished The Beach House. I had to email you to tell you how much I enjoyed reading it!!! I cried and read!! Such a lovely story!! This is the first book of yours I have read but it certainly will not be the last!! Thank You. Lynne
What positively wonderful books you have written - I have loved them all. Certainly would be hard to pick a favorite, but Beach House and Time is a River pulled me right in to the beautiful surroundings and lovable characters. I attempted to read them slow so I could stay in the story longer!!! Thank you for the storytelling gift you share with us all.
I absolutely adore the books that I have read, which includes The Beach House, The Book Club, Swimming Lessons, and The Four Seasons. I am now going to get "Girl in the Mirror." I will read all your books. I picked up "The Four Seasons" to read on the plane, and I was hooked with your writing. I didn't know you until last March. I have never felt this way about any author. When are you going to come North? I have gotten you 7 more readers, since I discovered your books. Keep writing, we all be reading your books.
I had mailed a book by Sherryl Woods to another member of PaperBackSwap.com and she recommended that I read some of your books since I enjoy Woods,Susan Wiggs, Robyn Carr, and Debbie Macomber. I look forward to reading your books.
love your books!!!!
I recently read three of your wonderful books about our natural world: Skyward, Swimming Lessons and Turtle Summer. Turtle Summer is beautiful! I learned a lot and I wanted you to know how much I enjoyed them.
I wish these books would come in large print. For us older folks.
While house sitting I found a copy of The Beach House. I read it while I was there and now I am hooked. I have all of your books except Last Light Over Carolina. Thank you for your wonderful books.
I have read The Beach House, Swimming Lessons, Time is A River and The Four Seasons. I enjoyed each book and look forward to reading future books. Each story was so easy to get lost in and so touching. Thank you for the great books and I look forward to reading all of your future books!
I just wanted to tell you how much I have loved your books. I have read 3 of them and plan to go to the Library tomorrow for another one. Please keep writing. And thank you. R. deB

I love reading your books :=)
I read Time is a River and loved it! Recommended it to my book club and we are not only reading it but doing a "show and tell" by going to my house in the mountains of North Carolina. Seven of us! My friends asked if we could learn to flyfish while in N/C. Can't wait to read all of your books. You are very gifted.

Are you going to have a new book released this summer? I hope so
Have read "The Beach House" and "Sweetgrass" and found them to be one of most enjoyable read on a long winter night. You find yourself in the book living their lives with them and that always makes for an enjoyable read. jeanne
Just finished reading "Skyward". Really enjoyed your writing! The plot line involving a nurse and a rehab clinic was something I could closely relate to. I have been volunteer at the Schuylkill Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic in Philadelphia, PA for the past 4 years. Although we take care of all animals native to PA, I enjoy working with the 'big birds' the best - raptors & vultures. I am also a former nurse (that worked in the neonatal intensive care unit). I will be sure to check out your other books.
Ms. Monroe I had never read any of your books before. I just finished "Time is a River" and just loved it, until the ending, that made me sad. You just have to write a sequal to this book to let us know what happens to Mia after leaving Watkins Cove and returning to Charleston. I was puzzled at the ending, when Mia fishes at the river with Stuart before leaving, she dips her hands in the river and says "remember me". Is she speaking to the River, to Kate or to Stuart? Mia never definitely says if she will return to Watkins Cove or not and I would love to know if Mia follows her heart and returns to Stuart and Watkins Cove. Please do a sequel soon. This is one reader that would be very happy if you did and I know other readers would be happy as well.
Thank you so very much for your words of encouragement today at the Savannah Book Festival. As I mentioned, I was again questioning whether the struggle to write serious literature is worth the angst. At least for now, I've determined it is. Blessings on your passion to raise concern for all of God's creation. Jan Durham
Hi Mary Alice, I'm currently reading "Last Light over Carolina" and it is a treat. I picked this book because I love stories of the Carolina coast. Well done! Thank you, James
Debbie
I love your books!!
I discoverd Mary Alice Monroe in the winter of 2009 when I read "Time Is A River." It moved me so that I have just finished reading it again. I have found my new favorite author and have devoured Sweetgrass, The Beach House, & The Four Seasons. I can't wait to see what else is available. Thank you for your style, your passion your commitment to people and life. Sincerely, Paula Miller
Mary Alice, I will be a volunteer at the Savannah Book Festival this year. I was in Savannah yesterday for "training" and when Matt talked about your book ... I said "Oh she's a friend of mine"... Well, I did meet you one time in the lobby of the hotel in Columbia, SC .... and I've read all you books so does that really really make us "friends"?? Looking forward to seeing you next weekend. Tommye Cashin
The name "Mary Alice" recently drew me to "Time Is a River" because my mother's name is Mary Alice. Although I am not a fly-fisher-woman (or a fisher-woman either), I thoroughly enjoyed your novel. Thank you!
I just finished reading "Last Light over Carolina." Awesome book. It brung the true lifes of wifes and husbands, with ups and downs strength and weakness. This is a true love story striaght to the heart. I thought I loved reading Dorthea Benton Frank and Nicholas Sparks. Great writers. But, you have taken a little piece of me with every one of your books. You are awesome writer. Hope another book comes out soon. Best wishes, Linda Steinecke A true GRITS girl girls raised in the south!!!
I am about to start my first Mary Alice Monroe book.
I have just started reading your books. Sweetgrass was my first and I just read Beach House. I can't wait to start Swimming Lessons. I Love the beach and have spent many summers on the South Jersey shore with family growing up. I have always wanted to visit the Carolina beaches. I feel like I have after reading your books. Thanks so much for sending me to the beach in the middle of winter.
Read "Time is a River". I used to flyfish in Colorado. Loved it. Also loved the novel.
I'm listening to "Swimming Lessons" while I'm at work and enjoying it so much even though I read the book when it first came out. I thought the reader was so good so I looked to see who it was and was surprised to learn it was you. You not only write the best books I've ever read but are an excellent reader. You change your voice for each character and it adds so much to the enjoyment of the book. I'm just waiting for your next book. Thank you so much. Trudy
Recently opened my "Coastal Living" magazine and there you were my favorite author. Living in Florida, we too love those blue crabs and catch them right in back of our house. I will try your friends recipe. Have all your books and anxiously awaiting the newest one in 2011. my favorite is still "The Beach House".
I just finished "Last Light Over Carolina" a few minutes ago. I read it in almost one day. I have read each of your books. This was your best written book. You delicately went back and forth between past and present tenses, which made it an easy read, but hard to put down. The story was very contained and each component had a beginning and an end. I cannot wait for your next book. Thank you. Christie Richardson
I have been reading your books for years. I buy each one as soon as it comes out and have recommended you to many others including my 2 daughters! I love your books!
I am a retired teacher and at age 72 am enjoying books more than ever. I cannot BELIEVE I haven't discovered YOU till recently. I am " in process" of reading ALL of your books. Thank you so very much for adding to my absolute delight in books. What enpowerment your books speak of, and the description of the lowcountry, the environment, your tender renditions of people of all ages. I absolutely LOVE your books and the pleasure they have provided me in these past few weeks.
A beautiful brass Christmas ornament of a shrimp boat is available from an organization called ABLE. When I saw them, I thought of you. They are only $10. Their website is www.abledisabilities.org. The money helps people with disabilites here in Beaufort county.
I just finished reading "Girl in the Mirror". It was an excellent read and a great story. I keep a list on the computer of books that I've read, and "The Four Seasons" was one of them. Unfortunately, I don't remember the story, even tho I just looked at the blurb on your website. I would probably remember if I started reading the book again. But, I remember the book cover!!
Wow! I just finished reading Swimming Lessons and The Beach House; Christmas gifts to myself. I love a good story but when I learn something and get inspired to learn more, then I am in heaven. Now I just need to convince my family that we need to take a "beach" vacation this year. I can't wait to read the rest of your books. Thank you for taking that step further from just enjoyable fiction to thought provoking and inspirational fiction. Books like yours are keepers in my house and will be read again. Living near Chicago prevents me from being a true "turtle lady" but I'm still encoured to discover more about these special creatures. I can't wait to find an aquarium that has a loggerhead or two. Keep on writing!!
Just finished reading Time Is a River. Couldn't put the book down. Completely took over my reading for the day. Just loved the whole concept of the story. Can't wait to read the other books you have written. Thank you.
I was switching tv channels yesterday and was so happy I lucked upon "The Big Picture" where you were being interviewed. Your part of the program was very interesting as I have read most of your books except the last two. I truly enjoyed the show and hearing about some new authors. I have always felt like you had something extra special in your messages for your books and having had the life and death experience you did, makes it all come together. My small place is filled with books, so I am going to have to give some to Goodwill so I can get your last two. I have read most of Cassandra King, but have never heard of Patti Callahan Henry whose books I will have to now purchase and read also. I do like Cassandra and understand her and her husband, Pat Conroy spent the summer in my home town of Highlands, North Carolina where she wrote another book. Our little bookstore there, Cyrano's, has lots of great authors for book signings and hopefully, someday they will have you! Elizabeth Wilson
Hey, as in your book sweetgrass my name is Preston Blakely. I realized also that the setting is in south carolina and that is where my ancesters are from. I was just wondering first of all if your book is true, and second of all where did you get the name Preston Blakely.
